PS2 sold 10 million units by August of 2001? I'd need to see a run donw of that. I think the only machine ahead of it is the Wii. You can't say "there's no way" and then provide nothing concrete.

Wii shipped 10.x something at end of June... so one month of difference for the 10 million sold for PS4... so PS4 is yet a bit ahead it and it won't change in September due Destiny but after that Wii will be ahead.

Good to know. Thanks. :)

For PS4, obviously. Everyone else, well, the numbers speak for themselves.

The question was mainly in relation to the topic, though - which just so happens to be about America.

It's difficult to do launch alligned comparisions with the PS2 since the PS4 launched in a different time frame, but no way is PS4 doing better than the PS2 in Japan and probably not Europe either.

It's behind the Wii too. So if that's the market leader, it will be the weakest market leader we've seen in some time.

PS2 sold 10 million units by August of 2001? I'd need to see a run down of that. I think the only machine ahead of the PS4 is the Wii. You can't say: "there's no way" and then not provide anything credible.

Edit: Never mind. Seems my skepticism was well put

Again like I said it's misleading because the PS2 launched in Japan first in March of 2000 and then didn't launch in North America until late 2000 and Europe even later.

Look at your numbers the PS2 sold 3.52 million in Japan in its first 7 months alone ... PS4 will take years to hit that number in Japan. In North America, PS2 has been outpacing the PS4 pretty soundly every month for 2001 vs. 2014 month to month comparisions.

This month is no exception ...

PS2 August 2001 - 327k

PS4 August 2014 - 190k

Not even close.

Even if PS4 could maintain a sales pace with the PS2 in NA (which its not), Japan sales are so laughably one-sided that Europe can't possibly make up that much difference between the two.

PS4 is now a full million behind Wii in its first full year (Jan - Dec 07 vs. Jan - Dec 14). Still expecting it to sell about 4m in the US in 2014, vs. >6m for Wii in 2007 and PS2 in 2001.

The X360 & N64 did sell about 4m in their first full calendar years in the US though, so it's still pretty much a cinch for PS4 to top 20m in the US, and 30m is probably a safe bet too.

It will be amusing to see how Sony / Microsoft try to spin their one or two year over year declines in Nov-Dec. I don't see either of them getting anywhere near 1m in Nov, and it may be a stretch for X1 in Dec too.

Why is the XBO up 30k from last month? Madden?

Again, I need you to provide me the irrefutable info that says the PS2 hit 10 million by Aug 17, 2001, or you're just wasting everyone's time.

Edit: I'm not saying the PS4 will reach PS2 numbers (though that's hollow, as nothing wil), but for right now, aligned and all (no matter the territory run down), it's my understanding, based on industry chit chat, that the PS4 is currently ahead. Which goes back to my original point.

I'd say a combination of Madden and the organic sales rise we often see in August over July.

Finally people will stop claiming Wii U has second place locked down, at least for a while lol

LOL, stick to that belief if you want, but if you actually look at the factors behind the launches, PS2 is pulling ahead in North America beating the PS4 soundly for several months in a row and absolutely trouncing its Japanese numbers.

The PS4 is just hiding behind the fact that it had a less staggered launch, so its total to date looks more impressive than it actually is. It's definitely not selling like the PS2, it's horrible in Japan and faltering in North America.

190k for a first August for a market leader is nothing to write home about, it's quite weak.

I'm pretty sure if I dig around I can find more specific numbers but PS2 was at 30 million+ by May 2002:

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/14/technology/14GAME.html

So I'd say it's safe to say they were at 10+ million by August 2001.
