Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Next Level games quick climb up Nintendo ranks is quite surprising

I honestly don't want Next Level, or Retro, or anyone else to make another Metroid game.

I'd like Nintendo to kindly get off their own asses and make one again, a GOOD 2D one, a proper follow up to Super Metroid (which Fusion, while decent, wasn't), that many of us have been waiting for for over 2 decades now.

And to anyone who wants to trot out the tired old argument "but 2D doesn't sell on consoles", not only has that already been defeated by previous recent successes (DKCR2 notwithstanding, which while a good game, few were SUPER hyped for when announced), but I could almost guarantee that if Nintendo unveiled an honest to god Super Metroid follow up, in THAT style, in HD, on Wii U, people would be super fuckin' hyped for it.

Who are these people wanting a 2D metroid?

All I see is people saying Retro wasting their talent making DK games instead of MP4.

I think Next Level is a very capable studio! I would love ot see them work on a 2D Metroid game!

The coincidence with Retro is heavy Nintendo supervison. Level5 are exclusively devs to Nintendo by choice if I am not mistaken.

Retro isn't all that heavy on supervision. Miyamoto pretty much gave them free reign on a locked-down IP after he saw their work on other games.

As has been pointed out, though, you meant Next Level Games. :P And, yes, they did it by choice.

I would personally prefer them work on a new IP. I'm not interested in another 2D metriod. Kind of like I hope Retro is working on a new IP, but another Prime is ok with me. Considering how well Luigi Masion did, they might even want them to work on a third one.

I really don't want a 3rd Luigi's Mansion game... I just want someone to make a new 2D Metroid! :S

They split off from EA. Nintendo liked what the team did while they were at EA.

Kind of OT, but worth saying: I'd love to see Criterion split off from EA. Based on their stellar job on NFSMWU on Wii U, their great track record, and their interest in other racing/alternative sports they'd be a great fit bringing back WaveRace and ExciteBike

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

On 3rd January 2014, it was announced that co-founders Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry have left Criterion to found a new studio.

Sadly, one of them(I think it was alex ward) made it pretty well known that they have no plans on putting any games on the Wii U. Or working with Nintendo.

To me it looked like they wanted to form an independent "contractor" style studio ala Platinum/Level 5 etc. I'd think that means Nintendo could contract them just as anyone else could. I'm curious as to how they would handle something like F-Zero XD
