It depends though. Skylanders/Disney Infinity toys need that specific game. Amiibos (Nintendo's NFC) will work across multiple games, and unlike many companies, have a good roster to do this with. 

In fact who else could pull this off? Sony/Capcom could, Ubisoft is a huge game company, but they have only a few characters they could do.

I think unless they make a full game around it like Skylanders, it cant be done. Nintendo could let other companies however work with its HW. I mean we are getting a MegaMan Amiibo!!!
