Forums - Nintendo Discussion - From Nintendo's POV: should Splatoon's single player campaign be open world?

Splatoon seems like it's intended to 'rewrite the rule-book' which seem to be set out regarding the popular trends on rival consoles, and I feel like the exploration options that would be opened up if Splatoon's squid powers were used in a wide-open space could be fun.

So, do you guys think Nintendo will make Splatoon the Nintendozer of urban open-worlds the way it seems to be for shooters?

perhaps, would be fun!!!!

SO far it looks like just maps though :/

True, but that was for multiplayer and the mutliplayer mode they were showing seems inately suited to smaller maps. On a single player map I can imagine gamepad-map scrolling and painting your way up the side of taller structures may be easier to implement and provide a certain 'parkour feel' that seems to be all the rage.

Oh, I see you meant "open" world. Was a bit confused there for a second.

I doubt it will be, it looks to be just maps so far. But they haven't really mentioned any details of the single player campaign other than there will be one. I guess they could make it open world if they find a way to make the game challenging and fun in an open world setting.

I will say the game definitely caught my attention and I will keep a close eye on it.

It's coming out next year so I doubt they have enough time to make a fully fleshed out open world.

No... because that wouldn't make sense with the gameplay we've seen. There is no need to make things open world that have no need to be open world. See: LA Noire.

Lol, "upon" world. Quick fix there. But yeah, as awesome as this idea sounds, I don't think it's a good idea, or likely. Such an idea would be a drastic departure from the rest of the game. Instead, Nintendo should just release the game as the weird shooter that it is, and if it succeeds, eventually they can make a spin-off with the sort of gameplay you're suggesting.

The first thing we saw of it was playable and I heard no mention of glitches so its hard to figure out how far along it is, or how far along the as yet unseen parts are. Besides which I would suggest that its possible for them to make one giant map which you fight effectively a large-scale 'war' over in single player with the same amount of effort as it would take for them to organise a large number of single player variations of the multiplayer maps. - Unless they do it Mario Kart style, admittedly, which may yet happen.

Put simply you may well be right, but you may not nessecarily be; the question is - do you feel would it make sense for Nintendo to tackle that concept over the other options and do you think it could be effectively used with the mechanics we've seen so far?

This game is the next Titanfall lol. I, for one, think mechs are more interesting than the stupid paint mechanic. As far as the single-player campaign, we don't know that there is one yet.

I'm the first person to say that a game should be open world, but not Splatoon. Doesn't make sense.
