Forums - Sales Discussion - What would you have done if Sony had joined Microsoft in killing off used games and game sharing?

What would you be playing on in a Sony+MS DRM world?

Wii U baby, gotta support... 145 48.66%

Who cares I want my Halo/... 61 20.47%

PC all the way... but i'm not a hypocrit! 78 26.17%

Mobile games = Teh Futcha 1 0.34%

PSV / 3DS would get all my love 13 4.36%

Total:298

I never got the hullabaloo about used games so nope, I won't have cared one bit. Would've gotten a ps4 anyway most likely or maybe an X1 first if they had shown some games I found impressive. I'm not too fond of always online though because recently, I've had connection issues. One doesn't know when those might come.

I haven't bought a used game in a decade. If you want cheap games, just wait for their prices to go down instead of saving $5 by buying 2 weeks after launch from gamestop.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I would own a WiiU right now. Would have been fine too since 90% of my gaming these days is on my iPhone.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

WiiU + Steam sales. I'm not paying $60 for titles that are worth 0 after purchase. I trade in games I know I won't replay for 50% or more off the next purchase. I guess I would stick to indies mostly as I can't download 40-50GB.

I might still be tempted to buy a ps4 a few years later if the (worthless) discs come down to $30 or less for exclusives and multiplats I can't download for PC.

Wouldn't affect me at all since I'd still be exclusively Nintendo, but I'm still glad Sony didn't go that route. I'd be warning all of my friends and family about what they'd be getting into with the other consoles though.

But do you sell your old games?

So of you are on this high horse it is crazy. You buy used other things but when it comes to games no. People also work hard on the other things you buy used. And unlike years ago there are thousands of games out of every kind of device. The developers get most of there money up front. The publishers are the ones who get the bulk of the money. But you all keep telling your selfs you are being good spending more money than you should on games. I mostly buy new but after a year or two if I missed something and it is not of shelves and the digital price is to high I buy used. Stop pretending these games are your babies sell them if they take up to much space and stop making people who buy used and rent games feel like they are part of some problem.

If MS had promised that games would cost $10 less thanks to DRM and always-on everyone would have been happy.
...and $15 less for digital downloads.
I never understood why MS did not dare to go all digital, like Steam, iTunes , Google Play, GOG. It would fit into their Cloud-stategy and would make them able to merge Xbox and Windows together in the future.

I would stay with Wii U because of my preference in games.

Would have pissed me off a bit since I sometimes trade games with my friends, but I don't buy used games so it wouldn't have been that big of a deal for me. I rarely play consoles anymore though so that might be the reason why I wouldn't care that much. I've had a PS4 for more than a month now and I haven't played it once. I also haven't played my Wii U since a bit after Mario Kart came out.

The deal breaker for the Xbox One for me was the online check up thing. Not so much the no used games. So if this scenario of Sony joining MS in killing off used games used the same online check up system then yeah I wouldn't have bought a PS4 probably.

Well. If Sony's plan was similar to what Microsoft was... Nothing would have changed for me. Still would have bought both consoles. Microsoft's plan included the ability to LOAN and TRADE your digital games. So you were able to sell a game you purchased digitally. I don't even do that much used game buying and selling, but having that ability would have likely made me do it more. Much easier to just trade a digital game in then going to a store and having to deal with all that.. There were also going to be way more aggressive digital sales on newer games under Microsofts old policy. Yes, alot of this was just promises and who knows if it would have all came to fruition, but if this is what the policies were going to be.. I would have prefered it.

Microsoft sucked with their messaging on all of this. Everyone freaked out. Somehow everyone is ok with GameStop making money off us, but not Microsoft.
