Uncharted Movie Lands in Theaters in June 2016

Sony Pictures pushes back The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and slides the Uncharted film into its summer release slot.

The first-ever movie based on the Uncharted game series will make its debut in theaters on June 10, 2016, Sony Pictures announced today, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

This news coincides with Sony delaying the next Spider-Man film, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, until 2018. It was previously set to hit theaters on the same date that Uncharted will now occupy; another Spider-Man-themed movie, The Sinister Six (which features six of Spider-Man's adversaries) will launch later in 2016.

The Uncharted film's director, Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief), said recently that filming for the movie will get underway early next year. A leading actor has yet to be chosen; Mark Wahlberg was set to play Nathan Drake at one point, but that fell apart when a previous director, David O. Russell, dropped out of the project. Another director, Neil Burger, was subsequently attached to the film but also decided to drop out.

Gordon said last week that he "love[s] the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game," but doesn't want to simply retell the story featured in the games. "I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don't want to just see the same story told," he said. "You want extra shades."

A new Uncharted game, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, is currently in development at Naughty Dog for PlayStation 4. It does not yet have a release date, and Sony has not indicated whether it plans to tie its release into that of the film.

Do you wish the games industry announced release dates as early as the film industry? Let us know in the comments.

Around the Network

wish they got a better director.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

Aren't they also doing TLOU and Ratchet too? I suppose it's easy money but I don't know whether they will turn out to be any good. It kind if feels like they are milking it.

That being said, I wish Studio Ghibli made a complete movie of Ni No Kuni.

They are also making a Sly and Heavenly Sword movie.

it feels like only 1 in 10 game based movie projects are ever completed, so I won't expect to see it until they announce a final theatrical release day

Sly and Ratchet actually look like they can be decent films. That Heavenly Sword movie looks terrible, like the CGI looks worse than the cutscenes from the game.
