Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo phasing out the OG 3DS?

I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this, In the last couple quarterly shipments the OG 3DS numbers were very small compared to the XL & 2DS and I havent actually seen them in any stores in a few months which inculdes various retailers in Southern California and Norhern Illinois.

My theory is that they have a new revision releasing soon and are ending the OG model. They announced recently an NFC adapter that will be compatible with Amiibo's, I think this revision will include that functionality built-in and include the aesthetic improvements that the XL introduced.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Nintendo makes more profit on each 2DS and XL sold compared to a regular 3DS

So it would make sense

Maybe, but it might be due to the 3DS being less popular than the 3DS XL these days. But selling less than the 2DS? Must be the price I guess.

well... the XL and the 2DS are the newer versions so it wouldn't surprise me.

I doubt theyll have a new 3DS with a NFC built in to it for the same reason they didnt add a second circle pad to the 3DSXL. Could make people pissed.

They really need to make a 3DS Lite.

When they removed the original model from some Nintendo websites, I was expecting a 3DS Lite to be unveiled at E3. Now I don't know what to expect.

Steam: garretslarrity

Wouldn't doubt it... The original DS got phased out eventually so...

The original DS phased out by the time the DS lite and DSi came out, and considering the XL and 2DS are newer and "better", the original 3DS will definitely cease out of production soon.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Like it did when they added internet capabilities to the DSi? Oh wait...

Adding NFC is not the same as adding a new button or other control input. It adds new, unnecessary, but valuable functionality, just as the DSi did to the DS line. Adding a new control input would make some games unplayable on the entire 3DS line, which would piss people off. Adding something that doesn't affect game compatibility, just feature compatibility, wouldn't be that big of a deal.

At OP: Yeah, it seems like they're phasing out the original 3DS. It's to be expected. The original DS met the same fate after enough new models came out that were cheaper and/or better.
