Microsoft is offering pro-rata refunds to Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners who purchased a paid membership prior to the announcement that the company will drop its Xbox Live Gold paywall for apps come June.

Xbox Live Gold members who purchased a membership before the June update can cancel and receive the refund for unused remaining days between the date of cancellation and the date their paid membership ends. These requests must be made by Aug. 31 and requires six to eight weeks of processing.

Yesterday, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced plans to drop Gold subscription paywalls for "popular entertainment experiences" including gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch, Netflix and HBO Go, among others. Microsoft also announcedplans for a Kinect-less version of the Xbox One scheduled to launch on June 9 for $399.

That's generous of them. They are being quite generous these days which is not usual for them.

its not generous its them trying to find a way to sell on par with the ps4 globally, they are just added or in this case removing things that puts the system on par feature and price wise with the ps4.

Wow this is great news. Really good for the customer if you are trailing.

They are refunding the remaining time you have your Gold subscription for. That is being generous and doesn't really have much to do with catching up to the ps4 cause it effects people who already own the console.

This is pretty cool. I like this type of attitude, even though they had absolutely no reason to do it.

So bitter.  Of course its generous.  You would have to be being very churlish to suggest otherwise.

It's not generous.  It's something that should be expected.  You call it generousity that they're refunding people who had no interest in purchasing Xbox Live to begin with and did so for the sole purpose of using apps like Netflix or Hulu?

Next time you make a change to your cell phone plan or cable plan, you should thank the company for being so generous and reducing the cost of your bill for removing features you're not going to use.

Glad to hear the paywall is down. I'm going to use the refund to buy Titanfall on my 360! Wait, crap, no... that won't work...

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

the apps functioning on Silver membership is what you are talking about. A refund is the generous part. Some people....

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

im sorry i dont find refunding money to someone cause they were forced to pay for something they didnt want generous, if you dont want to play online but wanted to use netflix you had to get xbox gold, giving me a refund for MS finally seeing the error in this is not generous, Generous would be giving a full refund of the live subscription not just what wasnt "used".
