Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Activision waiting to see how Watch Dogs does on Wii U before they officially greenlight another COD for the system?

Almost everyone else in this thread is wrong.

Yes -- Activision and other 3rd parties consider Watch Dogs as a barometer of sorts for interest in cross-platform 3rd party games on Wii U regardless of ship date.

However, what piques Activision's interest more is the prospect of Nintendo getting online gaming right starting with MK8.

CoD:AW Wii U is practically a certainty as they have far better reason to port it than Ghosts. And they can get away with not fixing bugs or offering DLC with this version.

When it comes to a franchise like CoD, its success rests upon continually drawing in new players. The WiiU version accomplishes that in a particular way the other versions might not.

What are you talking about? There is nothing wrong with WiiU's online gaming structure. It works very well.

BTW they also get DLC and bug fixes from Activision.

Structure itself is pretty good and has it's own strengths. But right now I don't think there's a critical mass of frequent online gamers that is so crucial to making a game like CoD successful. With MK8, you have a huge influx of folks who are going to play the game online. The WiiU just might be their only next-gen console. If you create an online experience and environment people already like, it's that much easier to get the ball rolling with a game like CoD.

WiiU versions of CoD have bug patching support, but it generally comes later. A lot of DLC never shows up, like the Snoop Dogg DLC.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Watch Dogs is cancelled for Wii U. I can take bets if you want

I'm tempted to take that on.

Ubi was recently quoted saying they're now working on it.

With it being so close to done, they might as well finish it. Even if it doesn't sell well, they still recover some of the costs of development.

I think this is actually the most pre-ordered WiiU game they've ever had -- even higher than ZombiU.

At least with the wii u any cod game can use the assets of the 360 and PS3 versions but running such games on the original wii was a huge programming effort and compromise. The PS3 and 360 are still very viable platforms and will be for a few years and hopefully the wii u will benefit from that. I'm hopeful the wii u will have a strong Christmas and go into 2015 as a stronger format. While the wii u would never justify the investment in a call of duty game on its own as a conversion from another similar format for additional profits for Activision it makes sense. Even if it only accounts for 3% of profits that is still profit.

The wii u is reliant on continued support for the 360 and PS3 though for multi-format titles I'm sure.

CoD games did not sell very well on the Wii and sold terrible on the Wii U (even considered it's low installed base). So I don't think Activision needs Watch Dogs numbers to make a decision like that.

And yet they keep making them, once a year, since 2008. They would've stopped years ago if it wasn't profitable for them.

True that they probably don't need to sell many copies to make a profit, because it's just a port. But maybe it's also got something to do with market share, or branding. Being/staying the largest and best known FPS around. Anyways, I hope that they release it on the Wii U. Not that I'm going to buy it, but the console can use all the third party support it gets. But to stay on topic, I certainly do not believe Activision is using Watch Dogs numbers in their decision wether or not to release Advance Warfare on the Wii U.

- edit BTW, the CoD's released in 2008-2011 on the Wii were, with the exeption of MW3, all million+ sellers, so those were much more likely to be profitable than the 150-230k sellers on the Wii U.

COD Ghosts is the best selling 8th gen game (that's excluding 7th gen versions), and without the Wii U version, it would not be able to claim that title. It might be a mere 10% of the XBO version's sales, but it's still nothing to sneeze at. I mean hey, it's more than 90% of Vita titles' lifetime sales. I think if they announced it and gave it the same marketing attention, CODAW on Wii U could do 500k easily. Half of the problem with the Wii U Ghosts version was that you could NOT preorder it ANYWHERE. I looked. Target didn't have it available for preorder, nor Walmart, nor even Gamestops. At least around my area anyway. It was like the game didn't exist. They did a worse job marketing the Wii U version than they did porting it, if that's possible. It's not like it'd have cost any more, all they had to do was put a Wii U logo on things, say "and Wii U", and make it possible to preorder, and it would have sold twice as much. Actually make the DLC like they promised, and Ghosts Wii U could be in the top 10 Wii U games right now. I mean come on, there's no competition, it's definitely possible, they're just not trying.

Here is a thought. Put the damn game on the Wii U and let people know its coming out for the system. Getting sick of the crap that some developers do with Nintendo. Stop with the stealth release shit.

I agree that Activision likely couldn't care less what Watch Dogs sells.

The thing with porting COD to Wii U though is that its likely much cheaper than porting it to Wii, where you had to dramatically re-engineer the game to get it running on the considerably weaker hardware.

What?

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
