That handheld will probably just be able to play games on a TV in some fashion, thus replacing the need for a console anyway. |
I still think they'll try one more home console (a more properly conceived one with solid investment) before calling it quits. They've indicated as much up unitil now.

NFC toys will work with multiple games, you'll be able to use it to transfer saves. The first two games in this image are pretty much certain to be NSMBU and Mario 3D World, so it would seem likely that the toys will work with Smash Bros. as well in some way. They probably do different things in different games. I believe the NFC toy reader will also work for the 3DS through the IR slot.

Not quite.
Retweet by Gibbo: First pic of Nintendo's Skylanders/Infinity style NFC figurines for Wii U and 3DS, to be fully unveiled at E3
Retweet by Gibbo: Nintendo is emphasizing the fact that by transferring data from multiple games to your figurine, you can create a personalized figure.

Multiple games. It doesn't just work with one specific game. Which is actually probably smart.
Gibbo: Iwata- developers will move into new building in Kyoto around E3, currently teams are separate so will share more
Iwata- have established Business Development department with outputs like NFP, entering into new markets, use smart phone platforms etc
Gibbo: Not pessimistic on games but want other pillars as safety net for games business, more of entertainment company

Mostly cause the console is the one thats doing bad right now... The 3ds is doing great so axing that and making a new handheld while the wiiU is doing poorly basically means burning money since new sku = expensive and the 3ds is basically the thing thats getting them money right now. But yes, they could also be releasing a new handheld, it just would make sense (even though I really wouldn't want them to ever) to axe the wiiU than the 3ds if they must
