Forums - Sales Discussion - Ps4 outsold Wii U 3.5 times this week. Is it time to panic?

PS4? Forget PS4, Nintendo needs to work hard just to get the Wii U to sell at GameCube levels.

I also have the feeling those VGChartz Wii U numbers for the US market are overtracked.

How so? It's on track to sell around 80k in June. It sold roughly 500k in december. I can't see where you're feeling is coming from.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

What would bring you to that conclusion? They were substantially undertracked last time compared to NPD.

Nintendo projected 2.8 million for this fiscal year not to long ago, witch is till the end of March. VGChartz already has the Wii-U at 2.8 million from March last year, with about 10 weeks of sales to go. Sure Wii-U will have smaller stock now, but even at Wii-U sales levels we are talking 400k-500k.

Not sure if someone already answered you (too lazy to read through every post), however, if you were following their financials last year, you would have known that they had significantly overshipped in Q3-Q4 of their fiscal year 2012 leading to very very low shipments for Q1-Q2 2013 given how slowly the system was selling. So yea, in this case, shipments will indeed be lower then what they actually sold to consumers.

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Nintendo announced last week that they have sold 5.86 million Wii U's to date. VGChartz still shows 5.6.

And don't start with the argument "units shipped or units sold?" because every company do the same.

3DS has outsold PS Vita for multiple years at 6:1 world wide...

If it is time for Nintendo to panic on the Wii U at 3.5:1, then it must be time for Sony to fold the tents, coward home, and leave the handheld business with Vita.

The last bit of your post is a tad overstated for effect but I don't see how it's an unfair comparison.  You are correct that the beating Vita is taking to the 3DS is definitely something that Sony should be looking at as an indication that what they are trying now isn't working and they shouldn't just soldier on with the same strategy, and yes something crazy might be a good idea (like Vita TV seems like a crazy idea which obviously hasn't worked but shows they know the status quo isn't working).  Nintendo probably should look at WiiU in not quite as bad a light since the comparison between WiiU and PS4 isn't as bad as Vita to 3DS, but they shouldn't be going home satisfied of a job well done at least as far as marketing, sales, and mindshare goes.

Definately.  I just hate threads that have sensational titles like "Is it time to panic?" for Wii U... When the OP was clearly made by a fanboy who is an obvious Sony fan (Signature clearly stated they only own a Sony console and handheld).

Nintendo definately, has to look at its current business model and decide how to proceed.  Obviously the Wii fans did not fully jump on board to Wii U.  And Nintendo has to really look in the mirror and decide which way to go.  Right now their console's appeal to the typical core gamer is next to zero, and the fanbase they built with the Wii doesn't seem to excited about what the Wii U offered.  Their games are still good, but they don't have many of the features of the newest consoles...  aka Blu-ray playback, memory, storage, social features, strong online features, etc.  They really need to decide if this is the way to sell a console going forward.  Its good to differentiate your product, but differentiation should not throw out 90% of what makes consoles interesting now-a-days.

There is nothing wrong with understanding that you are not the market leader in the handheld department. Knowing this, gamers know that if you dont buy a Nintendo handheld, your only other choice is a Sony handheld, so having the 70/30 split is a win for Sony.

Sony is doing something beter than Nintendo in the Digital space though. PSN Vita games are selling better than their retail counterparts and with various new Games and DLC being released on nearly a bi-weekly release window, thats also a win for Sony.

The Vita is in a good place, not the best but in second place none the less.

The vita is in no way a win for Sony and is not in a good place.

Youre either in denial or delusional.

How quickly people forget that the Wii would have outsold the PS3 by similar numbers at the beginning of last gen.

Convenient amnesia, I guess...

It was time to panic since early last year...

I ask myself when nintendo will release DS games, and at wich pace. How crazy would be if all games published by nintedo got released on the same day, hum?

Anyway, OP does this every month. Same theme(nintendon't), diferent reason.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

Nintendo just needs to get the games out that people actually want, the lineup right now in terms of drawing power is terrible.

-Pikmin 3 - Always been a Niche Title, best seller was the 1st on Gamecube at 1.6 million.
-Wonderful 101 - Modern Gamecube game for the most hardcore gamers.
- WInd Waker HD - Remakes almost always only sell about 30 percent of the original release, sometimes way less.
-NSMBU - 4th release in last 4 years - People are burnt out on it.
-Wii Party U - Should have been Mario Party U.
-Game and Wario - Terrible Reviews, Weird name, Bad Sales.
-SM3DW - Semi-Sequel of 3D Land....Best game on Wii U, helped boost Wii U sales alot.

The best the Wii U has to offer (SM3DW) is still a "Sorta-Sequel" of 3D Land. Wii Sports, True New Mario, True New Zelda, Smash Bros , Mario Kart. That's what moved Wii's last gen, and the Wii U has none. There is still plenty of interest in Nintendo, the notion that people have moved on is ridiculous. The 3DS is outselling the Vita in Europe 6 to 1, yet everyone just calls Europe Sony territory. The Wii is still 1.5 million ahead of the PS3 in Europe. PS4 right now is the hot console with the games people want (COD/FIFA). If Nintendo wants the Wii U to start selling better they need to be the console with the games that people really want. Nintendo only has themselves to blame right now.

Until XB1 can double the Wii U's  system sales I wouldn't begin to worry.
