Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Can the XBOX One be saved?

Does it need saving already? Damn, the conclusions that can be drawn from a mere 2 months on the market.

Wizards, all of you.

Can you stick your cable into the Xb1 and get rid of your old cable box.... NO.  So its never gonna be a product for any one who does not play games.  Its a freaking add on to your cable box, most wont care for that especially at what it costs.

This is similar to the same BS we heard years ago how the consoles are a threat to PC and will blahhblahh blahh

Honestly, most non-gamers will probably stick with something like Roku/AppleTV.  Or if they're interested in something more, will be attracted by the slew of "smart TVs" (or BluRay players, or advanced cableboxes, etc) running Android or some such and offering advanced interfaces, which may include things like voice recognition (which curiously, doesn't seem to require cameras watching you wave your hands around).  Non-gamers may be upgrading from 720p or non-HD sets, thus need to upgrade TVs anyways, so might as well get that "advanced experience" built in... As the many TV OEM's peddling "smart TVs" and other devices will be trying to convince them of (with a combined advertising budget well exceeding XBone's).

I just see no reason why the SPECIFIC variant of "advanced interface" that MS is offering will be seen as particularly compelling vs. all the other options (and let's be clear: MS' reputation re: "interfaces" after Windows 8 and Vista and the near irrelevance of Windows Phone pretty much mean that nobody is automatically going to assume that MS' approach to interfaces is the must-have, superior and desirable one).  People now have a SLEW of devices that may allow them many other means to access similar material, so XBone also offering something that overlaps with what their TV/Laptop/Smartphone/etc all can do just is not that big a selling point.  Clearly MS still dreams of controlling all aspect of the consumer electronic sphere, but that ship has long since passed: MS *doesn't* control that, they are functionally irrelevant in areas like smartphones (those devices that people usually have right next to them while watching TV, and which happen to already do voice recognition and internet "cloud functionality" just fine, and which can trivially link up via Bluetooth/etc to control/interface with their TV/BluRay player/Cablebox/etc).

All that, and PS4 will also be offering multimedia features, at a price-point $100 less.  And PS4 can actually stream BBC stuff with iPlayer, which MS doesn't allow because it insists on putting ALL online functionality behind the Live Gold paywall, even when it's just accessing 3rd party internet stuff like anybody does from their computer or smartphone (for free).

Honestly, I think it's pretty lame discussing this whole "non-gamer market for XBone" thing, because, hey: this is a gaming site...

But if you want to consider it's relevance for the platform, how is that going to work?  Those people will contribute minimally to the XBone gaming ecosystem.  And remember, the name of the game of consoles is that the console itself is not a big profit maker, the OEM makes money by selling GAMES (and that's what drives further investments in the platform).  So what is the attraction to MS of non-gamers using XBone's to watch TV?

For that to make sense, they need to have some other way of making money off those people: Apparently charging people more $$$ to watch the Netflix they already separately pay for is MS' big plan.  They probably have similar other plans for inserting themself as a 3rd party in other online media ventures... increasing the cost to the consumer who can access similar services for FREE via a host of devices (which the XBone is technically capable of also doing).  Oh, and then of course monetizing the consumer by "spying" on their usage and selling that to other corporations, to target advertising or anything else they can use the info for.   Who wouldn't love that?  (by love, I mean $100 more than the most equivalent option, plus MS' ongoing costs like Live Gold)

Xbox One's storage options are not very elegant right now.

I waiting to hear how the console starts to perform when low on disk space. If it's anything like a PC (which it is because of the x86 architecture) the console will begin to get slower over time IMO

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Doesn't need saving yet, and it might not even need saving.

This is hysterical

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

We'll then this will be your first step towards awareness!   :)

i should have changed the title or first paragraphs to make mention that the FUTURE of XB1 can be saved.  That is what I am really stating.  Clearly all 3 next gen consoles had a great 1st 60 days.  It's the indicators that I see that concern me about the next 180 days and beyond.

It is near the end of the end....

Looks the evidence just keeps rolling in, M$ needs to act now...
