Forums - Sony Discussion - Apple to buy Sony?

I don't believe such a thing would happen. Sony still has a huge debt, nearly as big a its market cap, and its business core electronics department isn't very profitable. They could do it when the company is on the edge of bankruptcy (only if they don't change the way they manage their resources) but who knows. I don't see the PS4 making enough profit to balance their loss.

All you have to do is answer the question: What does Sony have that Apple needs?

The answer is: Nothing.

Their patents would probably be the big one.  I can also see Sony's film studio and music label being attractive to Apple because they could potentially deliver those content exclusively through their devices and services.  While companies like Amazon and Netflix are spending a ton of money creating new exclusive content that may or may not be a success, Apple would have established content that they know will sell.  Can you imagine if the only way to watch the Spiderman movies at home (legally) is to buy or rent them through iTunes?  Instead of trying to negotiate exclusive contracts after exclusive contracts for content, Apple would own all Sony film and music licenses outright.

With that said, I don't think it will happen.  While Sony has some valuable assets that Apple may want, they have too many other assets that Apple wouldn't want.  Any corportation as big and diverse as a Sony would be inherently difficult to acquire because of all the subsidiaries involved.  You can't just pick and choose the divisions you want to buy.  You either buy the whole company or you don't buy at all.

Please no!!

I think apple can also use some factories.
There is always more than just those divisions. it may be not catching your eye, but it's still there.
Like with Gracenote that sony sold yesterday. You didn't know it was there, but it helped on some major software like iTunes

If something like this happened, I'd hope Nintendo to counter with something similar, as far as teaming with the "west". Ninty + Valve anyone?

That would make Apple to big, and less profitable.

Apple has plenty of money to buy out Sony several times over.

While this is a possibility (if a small one) and it would be a smart idea on Apple's part, I dont see this happening. Nor really do I want this. While I dont think Apple would mostly leave sony alone to run their businesses, the possibility of them doing otherwise worries me. Also, I have never really been a fan of Apple and dont have a single of their products in my home.

I see a ton of people in this thread screaming Hell no....but can people provide a legit reason as to why it would be a bad thing? Serious question and not having a dig at anyone.
