Forums - Microsoft Discussion - If Microsoft Made A Handheld...

What do you think would happen?

It would dominate 15 3.54%

It would be successful en... 57 13.44%

It would flop 158 37.26%

Vita would be a huge success in comparison 192 45.28%

Total:422

If Microsoft made a handheld, what do you think would happen? I don't think it would be successful. I think Microsoft would make the same mistake Sony did with console-like games on handhelds. It would be more successful than Vita thought, since I think Halo and the other ones would sell more than Uncharted, and there would be more marketing.

It is gonna be an epic flop. *looks at windows phone*

Would love to play KOTOR on handheld, and Shenmue.

But im hoping one day, by some miracle, they will come out on Vita :P

Though I think my chances are going to be better served hoping they release an Android version of KOTOR :(

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

Microsoft trying to enter a popular portable electronic market?

Can't go wrong, right Zune?

It would fail more than the Vita Considering how bad Windows Phone and Zune did... Than again... MS will probably buy enough of them to make it seem as though everyone wants it

well, windows phone has definitely come a long way from it's introduction.  2 years prior, everyone kept saying that the wp os would never hit double digit marketshare anywhere and would never see explosive growth.  flash forward to today- we're seeing triple digit growth yoy and it's hitting double digit marketshare numbers in many, many areas around the world.

and then we have the original xbox- it was pretty much a flop compared to the ps2.  flash forward to the xbox 360 and you see the system really hit it's stride for the xbox brand.  and now with the xbox one- it pretty much broke all records that the xbox 360 held upon launch.

who knows what would happen to an xbox handheld (though I doubt we'll ever see one simply because of what ms may be observing with vita vs 3ds and 3ds's insane dominance).

People saying Windows Phone is a flop must not have looked at marketshare numbers lately. It is doing great.

I just hope it won't go the way of Virtual Boy or PSP GO.
But MS handheld will probably be Windows Phone sharing the same store with its Windows ecosystem devices.

There is no mistake with "console-like" games on the Vita.  Those games sell quite well.  The Vita also has an absolute ton of smaller games, which strangely seems to be glossed over often.  Even beyond that, ANY game is handheld-ready when you can instantly pause and resume at any point.

That argument is still bad and needs to die.

No, the Vita isn't doing well because Sony places almost no emphasis on first-party hand-held development.  They left that to third-parties, which simply does not work.  They have no major exclusive franchises created in-house to boost sales and they have very few titles aimed specifically at children, which is the main audience in the west.  Social games are the big sellers in Japan, another genre which the Vita lacks.  It's not that the Vita has "console-like" games--the 3DS has those, too--it's that they have way too few big games, period.

Which is probably what would happen with a Microsoft hand-held.  They would have to dedicate an vast amount of resources to creating content, which I just don't see happening, never mind that Japan would ignore the device, taking away a huge market for hand-helds.

No, Microsoft isn't going to make the mistake of trying to break into that market.  They'd get into mobile gaming long before they would even consider dedicated hand-held gaming machines.
