Forums - Gaming Discussion - What JRPG has the best story?

Eh, I'm personally not a fan of Chrono Cross or its plot.

Probably because I think almost everything seems bad when compared to Chrono Trigger.

I've never played Suikoden 2. I'm pretty sure it's on PSN on PS3. I'll have to go back and check. That said, every Suikoden game I have played had an excellent story. I really enjoyed Suikoden III and V. Especially V, the Queendom aspect was fascinating.

For me it has to be Persona 3 FES. From the very beginning the intrigue, the characters, all their back stories, the intrigue and finally the ending all left me with a sense of awe I seldom get elsewhere.

Xenogears, I'd say. It's convoluted, but at least it's self-contained and can be figured out. It's not missing any important pieces. The only problem is how the plot was more ambitious than what Square-Enix could realistically pull off at the time, so some of the storytelling in the game (I'm looking at you, disc 2) is less than ideal.

It's far better than Xenosaga. I still can't wrap my head around Xenosaga... not really because it's convoluted, but rather because it's somehow much more ridiculous.

Xenoblade's plot is comparatively simple, though the ending is quite the curve ball. I'm still not sure what I feel about the ending, but the plot as a whole gets massive points for the game world alone. And actually delivering on the potential of its world.

Nothing really holds a candle to Xenogears, plot-wise, although there are still plenty of JRPGs with great storylines. And it's not like Xenogears has the best gameplay of any PS1 RPG (Grandia for life).

Xenosaga's Perfect Guide explains everything. Everything. Xenosaga's story wasn't the most enjoyable for me but it was the most intriguing by far.

Besided Xenosaga, Tales of Symphonia and Persona 4. And Tales of Xillia which I played recently but can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable stories of an RPG I've played.

I wasn't confused by Xenosaga's plot, I just thought some of the plot twists were too "out there". In a sense, it was very intriguing, because the plot was "unique", to say the least. :P

I liked ToS's story (for the majority of the game), and I believe it has the best overall cast in the series. Vesperia and Xillia, however, have much better main protagonists I'd say.

I haven't finished Persona 4 yet but so far the story is solid. Actually, it's the only thing holding my interest in the game. I'm only about eight hours into it, though.

Xenosaga episode III is my second choice.

Seems like story based games do not get much support nowadays.

So sad... All these incredible games mentioned in this thread and nothing in the Ps3 era to make up for it (honorable mention to Nier and Valkyria Chronicles) besides PSN golden oldies!

Every single game mentioned in this thread deserves a 'thumbs up'.

Now personally, Xenogears and after that Xenosaga both had stories that really interested me. They went deep you know...

Slightly below but still very intruiging : SO3 and FF6 to 10

And then... : Shadow Hearts, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Lunar SSS and more from my personal golden age of gaming
