Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Xbox 360 is now the market leader in the US!

who still cares? next gen is here. Stop living in the past

Around the Network

NA market accounts for around 52% of the XBox 360 entire global sales and the NA region has kept the XBox 360 ahead of the PS3 for the majority of the 7th generation despite losing in Europe and Japan regions.

All three 7th generation systems will have won a region with XBox 360 winning NA, PS3 expected to win Europe and Wii winning Japan. All three systems will have sold over 85 million systems for a combined tally of around 280 million systems for the generation.

Yep, Xbox (versus Sony):

Does very strong in USA+UK

Does ok in mainland EU, but clear second to Sony

Gets crushed in Japan

Overall has sold more than PS3 worldwide (judging by the respective 80m sold announcements) but it's basically a tie no matter which is ahead.

Most of us know this...

With 360 and PS3 at 80m, and Wii discontinued at just over 100m IIRC, will be interesting if 360 can limp past Wii worldwide. It seems possible in 3-5 years if they get continued sales in developng markets.

BTW I keep track of NPD figures, and my rough figures have 360 still 1.6 million behind Wii in the States by NPD (through October figures). 360 should make big gains in Nov-Dec obviously, but I expect Wii will still keep a slight lead going into 2014. It should be inevitable eventually of course. Depends how well 360 can do in Dec and Nov as to exactly when.

I hope MS puts out a press release when they pass Wii in USA, just so we know.

Well I'd hope they'd do well in the US, not like they give a shit about the rest of the world.

YAY MURICA!

Yet they've outsold PS3 WORLD WIDE.

You know, in the whole world.

Despite PS3 having a 10 million advantage in Japan.

Except no.  PS3 has outsold the 360, and did it with  one less year on the market.

I guess when you lose the global battle, small victories are all you can hope for.

Well it's a matter of debate but I go by when the respective companies themselves announced 80m.

Just the fact Sony combined PS2/PS3 shipments for a year confused things and people took that as opportuinity to state PS3 was ahead with no proof.

Ok, even IF we accept PS3 is ahead (I definitely dont) It's like 81m vs 80m either way. BIG DEAL ITS A TIE.

PS3 did it with one less year at market and an absolutely abysmal launch...and first three years. the fact that they managed to scrape and claw their way out of third place speaks volumes about their continued dedication to their fanbase.  And we all know PS3 will continue to sell for another couple years, since Sony is known for keeping their old consoles alive well into the next generation.

I'm sure both PS4 and Xbox One will do fine, but PS3 was very impressive in its defeat of the 360.  Won by a hair, sure, but still won.
