Target cancelling PS4 pre-order bundles containing Watch Dogs or DriveClub

Target seems to be cancelling PS4 pre-order bundles which contained Watch Dogs or DriveClub – both of which were delayed into 2014 earlier this week.

Instead of offering a substitute, various Kotaku readers have informed the site that their orders have been cancelled, and that they will have the option to pre-order bundles starting next week on October 25, through a “first come, first served basis.”

It seems only PS4 bundles are being cancelled at present, as the article doesn’t mention Xbox One, which Watch Dogs was also set to release on.

Last week, Amazon and GameStop both stated the companies would honor all pre-order bundles with the latter offering the option of getting the console at launch and Watch Dogs upon release, or switching out for a different bundle.

Amazon also offered alternatives to its customers.

After rumors of DriveClub being moved into 2014 surfaced earlier this week, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the delay yesterday.

I just don't get why they're doing it this way... Why not just offer a substitute?  Those pre-order slots will be refilled too... It is pretty ratty.

They could offer unofficial bundles

Wow people think 2 games being delayed wont impact system sales at launch?

Yeah they could have at least given them an option. Now someone who was paid in full could miss out on getting one. I wouldnt preorder from them after this

System sales will be impacted but not to the extent some people think or even hope. Only the people who had no interest in any other games but the ones that were delayed and refuse to pick up any other game will cancel their pre-orders over this. These people are early adopters who already didn't want to wait to purchase the console so many of those affected by these delays will tough it out. Considering that Driveclub wasn't exactly looking popular in pre-orders, I doubt the impact will be very much from that title and even some Xbox fans agree.

Since PS4's are selling out and there are undoubtedly people looking to get their hands on one soon but just couldn't for whatever prior reason, cancelled pre-orders over these two games would open the door for them. Assuming the companies can and will take those cancelled pre-orders and allow them to be pre-ordered by someone else instead of simply holding them and having them on the shelf for sale at launch. When the Watch Dogs delay was announced, pre-orders for other titles shot up the list of hourly sales on Amazon. The delay of Driveclub has further driven PS4 titles up the ranks.

Perceived future value of a console is a strong selling point in the early years. Never doubt what people will pay for even if they don't get to use it immediately for what they wanted. If the promise is there and the end in sight, they'll stick it out.
