I think video gaming is a pretty good term.

probably "interactive virtual experience", which sounds pretty horrible

btw I think people play games for "excitement", while that term actually is pretty much the same as "fun" it doesn't have that innocent connotation

It's similar, but I think a better term would be "engagement," though that is semantics.

"interactive virtual experience"...that is a mouthful, though probably appropriate. I think the biggest problem is finding a name with the same appeal as "video games."

I can think of many games I wouldn't categorise under "excitement" that wouldn't come under "fun" and vice-versa, and games that come under neither.

'Entertainment' is I believe the best term to encompass all games (and films, music and books when used on it's own). Gaming is an interactive form of entertainment.... all we need to do is make a portmanteau: Intertainment!

Though while that sounds ok for the subject (to me at least) that leaves us with a difficult and clumsy verb form... saying "I'm a gamer" is much better than "I'm and intertainer"

Yeah, one thing "gamer" has in its corner is it is much smoother to say.

Okay.

Could you elaborate?

Sorry, I don't think I'll elaborate very well, but I'll try. It's basically a video and gaming but together, so it makes perfect sense to me. Interactive Entertainment I guess would would also make sense.

Real-time interactive software?

I think video game is perfect.

I think too often people confuse game with sport. When someone says "that's not a game, there's no challenge", they should actually be saying it's not a sport.

Meanwhile a game can be anything!

Like I posted earlier, though, not all video games embody the idea of "games," since that is associated with fun, among other things.

Video games seems pretty good to me. They're games broadcast via video. They're meant to be played, alone or with friends, and they're meant to be fun.

These days, bitching about games and sales seems to be the more popular occupation. So that.
