Many people have clamored for Nintendo to make smartphones games, but according to these numbers, it just doesn’t make sense to do that. Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds, generated less revenue than Animal Crossing New Leaf, and that’s the biggest franchise on smartphones & tablets.

Rovios last years revenue:
 http://www.rovio.com/en/news/press-r…ancial-results
Like I said, 150.000.000 Dollars revenue.

Animal Crossing sales in Japan: 3.608.632 (price: 4.800 Yen, that’s like 48 dollars).
http://www.famitsu.com/biz/ranking/

So, revenue is about 170.000.000 Dollars for Animal Crossing so far.

I think it’s best if Nintendo sticks to selling their IPs on their platforms.

Here's the problem (and mind you, I own and love the 3DS), the problem is that dedicated hand helds are going to die out. That's not even up for debate imo. Anyone with unbiased views can see this coming a mile away. Apple doesn't even really TRY to paint their idevices as hand held gaming platforms, and look at how well it's done. Just imagine when they DO decide to go after handhelds. There's nothing Nintendo can do at that point. If they just stick around until the boat has sunk, it's too late. Nintendo needs to do something BEFORE then imo. Their entire company depends on it because that's their bread and butter.

i like to say no, why? Cuz as much as Apple/etc are great and can take over, they dont have pokemon, pokemon by itself will keep nintendo's next handheld over 20mil without a doubt, not to mention MK+Mario, Also AC nw since its that big! I understand you but at the same time Nintendo has that brand that just cant be taken over. Lets say the next handheld only had a pokemon game built in it for $200, then guess wat? Its already sold 10mil, nintendo aint going anywhere with handhelds. 3DS was suppose to be gone bu its over 33mi in less than 3 years, yes tablets/etc had a huge affect but Wii Aint Going Nowhere lol

By saying it's not up for debate in your opinion, you show that it is you - not others - that is bias.

thats true, and no matter wat pokemon is so huge it wont leave! Nintendo handheld already established titles that come once every 4-7 years to keep its hardware alive!

I OWN a 3DS lol. If it were up to me, dedicated hand helds would rule the roost and last forever, but the reality of it is, it's in decline while ios is taking over. We can all just plug our ears and cover our eyes and live in a nice little bubble if you want, but change happens.

What I DON'T want to see is Nintendo die off. There's going to come a time when they have to embrace this change, and I hope they do.

Nothing can stop progress, whether we like it or not. If you love Pokemon, and you want it to last, then you should be hoping Nintendo embraces this change that's happening or else it'll cease to exist. You either get in another boat, or sink.

Maybe Nintendo can partner with Apple? That would be pretty neat imo. Think about the dominance!!

Except 3DS sales are actually doing really well right now. They've been typically outperforming the DS at this point in its life span. Which should be pretty impressive considering "handhelds are dying out" yet the current gen handheld is selling better than the last gen handheld.  I didn't realize increased units sold translated into a platform dying. Also 3DS software sales have been very impressive so far too.

Didnt Angry Birds come out in 2009? I'm surprised they are still making that much money.

I wonder what AC will be in 2014 ;p

This.

People should really stop acting in denial, just take a look at the last news from Level 5, developers are indeed going to put more resources into mobile gaming. Some will be able to continue the support for dedicated handhelds, some will probably not.

I have good faith in Nintendo, but for now, let's enjoy the good sales of 3DS hw and SW.

What was the last hit game Rovio produced?  Amazing Alex? which probably didn't make them that much revenue compared to Angry Birds.  The main thing I see happening is that the dedicated hand held market is becoming more like the home console market.  Hand held market will be dominated mainly by the major 3rd party companies along with first party.  There will always be the eshops to purchase indie games or games from smaller developers but there will be less physical releases of games from small companies on dedicated hand helds.  Basically, I still don't see all the doom and gloom from smartphones.  Has smartphones stolen consumers from dedicated hand helds?  Sure but there will be always money to be made in the dedicated hand held market for the foreseeable future.  Nintendo is about to make a lot of money from the 3DS especially this holiday season with a lot of good releases in all markets.
