Actually I kinda did just buy the PS2 for use as a DVD player. I basically only played Q3Arena on PC at the time. I needed something to play DVDs, PS2 did the trick and happened to play games as well so it was a no brainer. I still hardly ever played games on it. I would say I gamed on the PS2 once every 3 months. Regardless the fact that people are claiming the PS4 is going to demolish the Xbox One and Xbox One is doomed is ridiculous talk. MS is pushing for a all in one media gaming device. PS4 is strictly going for the hardcore gamer. MS feels comfortable that they have a big hardcore gaming audience that they built up with the 360 so they are trying to expand their market. The Xbox One lineup of exclusives is impressive so you can't say that MS isn't taking gaming seriously, but they want to the Xbox One to be recognized as more than a one trick pony. We'll see how advertising pans out later on this year. Both companies are using a different strategy so we'll see which one works. I believe both consoles have room to be successful.


I wasn't trying to say you didn't buy your PS2 to play DVDs I asked if you purchased yours on launch day. The day where most people buying a console are buying them for games. I know people buoght a PS2 because it was a DVD player and played games. But the PS2s INITIAL success was driven by gamers. That's why the 360 was so well received. Gamers bought it on day one and drew all their friends to it. That inertia was at the center of the 360's success. It is the same for most consoles. I never claimed that the XB1 is or will be a failure in the least. Just having an IP named Halo is enough to sell some consoles. However, trying to expand your market BEFORE you have the core audience on board is not a formula for success. Especially when the 'features' in the XB1 are absolutely nothing really new.

I too believe there is room for both but at this point MS pissing off the hardcore audience has stunted the XB1 off the starting block.

What's the issue with promoting the Xbox One as a multimedia machine? I already know it is going to play games because I'm not an idiot and I saw plenty of them at E3. I want to see what else the consoles can do besides games. MS has shown the interface and some of these other things while Sony is keeping the interface under wraps. Why can't we see it? User interface experience and multimedia experiences are as important as games. The hardcore gaming audience is only so big and if Sony only goes after the hardcore gamer you can bet they won't sell anywhere near what the PS2 sold. I guarantee half the people who purchased the PS2 solely did so because it played DVDs. I know I was one of those people.

I'm just going to through this out there, but what if this is a service for their T.V.s? Like being able to stream Gaikai right to your Sony television?

Its very possible.  With their current focus on the PS4, it is most likely something to work with the console (and maybe Vita/PS3).

If Sony sold TVs at the scale of Samsung, it would be much more possible.
