Forums - Sony Discussion - Tretton: “To Force Every Consumer” To Have a Camera “Ends up Coming up a Little Bit Short”, “It Should be a Choice”

The PS4 is set to launch this holiday for $399, going up against the $499 Xbox One. With the PS4 set to be more powerful, the reason for the price discrepancy is mostly down to the lack of a bundled camera, while the XBO comes with the Kinect 2.

Addressing this issue, and skirting a chance to comment on the rumor that this was a last minute decision, SCEA’s Jack Tretton told IGN:

I feel like we’ve got more experience in motion gaming than anybody because back to the original PlayStation EyeToy on PlayStation 2, we brought a hands-free gaming experience in front of the camera and we found that we could do a lot of great things with it. But it didn’t apply to everything. So trying to do a one size fits all was really difficult, so we really feel like, for the development community and for the consumer it should be a choice. If you’re a developer who is excited about the camera and really think you can integrate that into making a great game, please do it – we’d love to have you on board, and if you’re a consumer, who is interested in buying the camera, we’d love to sell it to you for 60 bucks.

But to force every consumer to have one on day one, when some of them may be on a limited budget and don’t necessarily have the interest in it, or to mandate that the development community has to support it… ends up coming up a little bit short in terms of things of things that people can get excited about.

The PS Camera launches at the same time as the PS4 for $59.99, but Sony has yet to show any real support for the peripheral – DriveClub allows you to take pictures of yourself, and a tech demo of minigames was demoed.

Are you happy that the PS4 comes without a camera, or would you prefer that the PS4 was more expensive but that the Camera had a guaranteed audience developers could rely on? Let us know in the comments below.

I prefer having a cheaper console without a peripheral I care nothing about.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

:D

When Comparing a massive Failure for two straight generartions to an Industry success.... You should claim that you don't want to force the third iteration of said failure to your customers....Maybe Third time is the charm?....Well Maybe not since it has no games....

At least Sony is nice enough to not force a camera down our throats. (Yuck, what a nasty image.)

Still, what's with that PS+ subscription being necessary for multi-player? Isn't that a tad "forceful"?

Does it need games? it's just a camera.

Well it seems that according to most Sony fans..Sony should just give up on the periphial...

or motion contorls in general. But didn't it at lease sell? I don't the Kinect but it sold because of MS marketing. Maybe Sony should Market it better.

Massive failure? Really?  I've noticed that you never post anything positve about Sony and that's fine, but this is really pushing it. It's as crazy as calling eyetoy and move massive success. If anything, both did decent, but not great. There's a huge difference between a product failing to meet a company's high expectations, but still selling tons of copies (e.g. Tomb Raider, Hitman 3, L.A. Noire) and an actual "massive failure", such as "Fuse" or even "Sorcery".

Do you even know how many EyeToys or Moves have been sold/shipped?

Well, if they can show me a good reason on why I should want the camera I wouldnt mind paying a little extra for it. However, neither company has really shown me a reason to want it.

I remember being pretty excited about kinect because of the possibilities of new gameplay, but it ended up just being a broken motion control mini game playing device. The new kinect doesnt really look much better.

Playstation eye/move also has potential, but sony has refused to really put any meaningful effort behind it.

whether its a "success" or not is irrelevant, most of th games for these things suck anyway. They could sell as much as they want and that wont change. IMHO. I like the way Sony approaches it, just use it when it makes sense(Killzone, Heavy Rain, etc.)
