I like that they're utilizing both the Gamepad and the Wiimote + Nunchuk, like Wii U devs should.

If it's anything like the other games it won't.  The game is mostly very relaxing it's only when you get into battles, which can oftentimes be avoided, that you risk losing Pikmin. You feel bad every time you lose some of the little guys which drives you to get better and be more careful.

It's also very satisfying going back to any enemy that gave you difficulty earlier in the game and just laying waste with your 100 Pikmin army in tow.

It's a very hard game to 'get' completely until you try it but I strongly recommend that you do.
