Forums - Sales Discussion - Why do some people think 360 will outsell PS3?

@HappySquirel

Well because these Ps3 Killer apps have PEAKED around 10 million (FF) & 15 million (GT)

& Ps3 hasn't SOLD that many consoles...

so maybe gamers of those franchises are waiting

& BTW GEOW DID TURN AROUND 360...like it or not...& most halo 3 gamers brought it then....thats why you saw a small lasting spike with Halo3

If gamers reacted the way you're suggesting, there would be no Playstation brand because because people would have waited for their games to be released on the Sega Saturn or N64 ...

A high percentage of copies of high profile games are sold to people who have little loyalty to the series; these people buy the game because it is a high profile game in a genre they're interested in on a platform they already own. This is the main reason why games like Mario Party 8 can be the worst game in the series and still be the best selling game in the series.

I can make a list that demonstrates that EVERY PS3 game has sold to 1/2 (or typically far less) the level that their PS2 counterparts did; the fact is that there is nothing that ensures these PS3 games will sell to nearly the level that they did on the PS2, and there is nothing saying they will move hardware beyond the level that the big releases the XBox 360 has had.

1 Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec 14.87m
2 Gran Turismo 10.85m

3 Gran Turismo 2 9.37m
4 Gran Turismo 4 8.87m

LEAST selling GT was around 9 mln.
BEST selling GT games were FIRST GT games on PSone and PS2.

So, ALL 9 mln. PS3 owners which already bought by the end 2007 are GT fans? LOL.

STOP comparing Playstation BRAND to NON playstaion brands.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

The 360 will outsell the PS3 for various reasons in my opinion:

1. Business/Consumer Modelling

In terms of business modelling, MS has done a fanatasic job gearing their product to a variety of consumers. Whether your interested in a shooter (Halo3), RPG (Mass Effect), JRPG (Lost Oddessy), Action RPG (Too Human) etc, there is a game for everyone. Sony does have several killer apps that will resident in sales, however, MS has a wider variety of great games.

2. Online

As the console market gears more towards online gaming, MS will continue to have the edge. They are a software company and I am assured that they will always possess the superior online product. The integration of games is currently better then all the competition, in addition, developers are taking full advantage of this with DLC etc. Think about how many game demos the 360 has in comparison of the PS3.

3. Innovation

Sony has developed an amazing piece of hardware, there is no doubt. However, in terms of gaming innovation they have not shown me anything yet. It is a fact that the PS3 costs about 2.5 to 3x more to develop for then that of the 360. For this reason, game developers can continue to create new franchises that would otherwise never be seen. In addition, due to the attach rate of the 360, they can almost be assured that there product will recoup its inital investment and be profitable. For example:

-Too Human -Eternal Sonata (now multi)
-Gears of War -Lost Oddessy
-BioShock -Banjo Kaazoie 3 (Wasnt out last gen)
-Mass Effect -Infinite Undiscovery
-Alan Wake -Shadow Run
-Halo Wars
-Crackdown

4. Developer Support

MS has attained a high level of support from a series of accalimed developers post in North America and abroad. Whether were talking about the giants being Square-Enix and Capcoms or the little guys such as MystWalker, all have stated that they will formally support the 360. If you recall back in the PS2 days, these developers were just beginning to form relationships with MS. Now that they have them, MS will continue to leverage support and continue to build its gaming library.

5. Who hasnt bought a console yet?

If you havent already bought a PS3 or 360 I would consider you a "casual gamer". MS has a larger library of amazing games and that will only increase. As of today the PS3 has 2 games in the top 20 games that have been released, why would a "casual gamer" buy a product that has a less compelling lineup of games? Sure there is MGS4 and FF13 still coming but that takes there total to 4...to me still no reason to go and pick one up especially if I was a casual gamer.

Gran Turismo 4: Prologue in Japan sold 800,000
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue in Japan sold 200,000

My point still stand!

@HappySqurriel,
1) They are NOT FULL games.

Gran Turismo 4: Prologue in Japan sold 800,000
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue in Japan sold 200,000
= NOT ALL GT FANS BOUGHT PS3 YET.

Thank you for PROVING THAT. =)))

So, you're going to look at the (relatively) poor sales of Everybody's Golf, Ratchet and Clank, Virtua Fighter, Dynasty Warriors, Pro Evolution Soccer, Fifa, Madden, Guitar Hero, Need for Speed, and pretty much every other game that has been released on the PS3 as the fans of these series haven't bought a PS3 yet?

Face the fact that gamers tend to hold no real attachment to the majority of the games they buy, and the games that each gamer is attached to are quite a bit different from gamer to gamer.

Happy, you're attempting to use logic against Crazzyman... Prepare yourself for utter failure.

Same reason some people think the PS3 sold more consoles in 2007 - brand loyalty defies logic.

The question is how long will it take the PS3 to surpass 360 sales. It will almost certainly not happen until sometime in 2009, if everything goes Sony's way. 2010, 2011 are more likely, and by then, the X720 will be on it's way and no one will much care.

In the end, MS will have expanded it's base this generation, and Sony's will have diminished. No matter how much Sony recovers, the PS3 will be seen as a step backward for them.

I don't think most consoles owner are looking forward to have to upgrade them every 4-5 years like a PC like Microsoft think...

Stopping the Xbox wasn't that such a great move although you could understand why they did it, if they do the same thing with the Xbox360 in a few years that move will get them a lot of negative feedback....

The PS2 is going on 8 years and still had some software ranked among the top bestsellers this last holyday ( GH3).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

With how many units the PS2 sold (along with how many units they continue to sell) has given the PS2 the lifespan that only dominant consoles can have. 5 to 6 years is the typical time between a console and its successor being released; as long as the next XBox is out after the 5 year mark no one will think twice about it.
