This is a continuation of this thread of sorts: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=163005
It's referring to this article, which is posted in full at the bottom: http://www.gamesreviews.com/news/06/ps4-online-blocked-for-countries-without-a-store/
I had to make this new thread since badgenome refused to update his OP with some actual info.
Myth: people in unsupported countries won't be able to play PS4 games online.
But here's the fact: people living in countries without PSN (of which the number is always shrinking) can make an account in another country and order their prepaid cards (PSN credit and PS+ sub) from eBay. They can also likely buy foreign prepaid cards locally if they look around, or get a prepaid VISA with that country's currency. Which is exactly what they were already doing. Shocking, I know. I had to make a foreign (chose UK) PSN account too because PSN hadn't then yet come to my country (the lovely Croatia).
Multi-region, remember? No IP block, no nothing.
How is this news, again? We've already known (non F2P) online multiplayer sits behind a paywall, and the fact that PSN hasn't yet rolled out in every country is, well, a fact. Everything else is the same situation as with the PS3. This isn't a big issue as much as it is an inconvenience, which Sony is actually trying to rectify instead of telling people to get a PS3 instead.
The article:
PlayStation Plus isn’t available everywhere, and neither is the PlayStation Store, and although Sony has made every effort to roll features out to every country interested, it’s not always possible. Up until recently, this has been a minor inconvenience, a barrier that blocks some people from taking advantage of free games, digital purchases and cloud saves. What about for the PS4 though? It’s today been confirmed that unless you have access to a PlayStation Store in your region, you won’t be able to play online on Sony’s next-gen console.
User Gennosuke asked on today’s EU store post whether or not he’ll be able to play online in Romania. Fred Dutton answered apologetically.
“Unfortunately at this time gamers in countries which do not have a Store cannot access online multi-player features. However, we are considering every measure to offer PlayStation Store services to these territories as soon as possible. To clarify, the affected territories are: Bahrain, Lebanon, Romania, Oman, Slovakia, Malta, Cyprus and Iceland.”
