Forums - Sony - Play PS3 on Monitor?

I just bough a PS3, but I want to play it on my monitor.

My monitor is a full 1080p with DVI and VGA inputs but not HDMI. I used to use the VGA input with my XBOX via its special cable and now I want to do the same thing with the PS3.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on the net on how to do this.

Anyone who has accomplished this, pls help a brother out.

Yes it can.

"HD" is merely just a resolution, we had computer monitors 15+ years ago with resolutions (I.E. More pixels) than HD offers today, however back then screens were 4:3 and not 16:9 aspect ratios.

As for HDMI being better than other inputs, that's completely false, Display port is superior, Dual-link DVI can be superior.
Personally I run my PC off 3x Display port, my other PC with it's monitors in eyefinity uses 2x DVI and 1x Display port, note the lack of HDMI. :P

Besides, most PS3 games aren't even "Full HD".

As for the Op. Grab yourself a DVI > HDMI converter.

How are you getting sound? Your monitor have speakers?

Or does PS3 have a headphone jack you can plug into directly? I know for the 360 hooked up to my monitor I had to use both the cable that came with to plug into speakers and then HDMI cord to plug into my monitor. Had to break open the cable that came with to be able to fit both side by side on the 360. Stupid microsoft put the ports so close to one another.

Have not even attempted to hook up PS3, so don't know how I would get sound. Video would be easy, cause unlike you I have an HDMI on at least one of my monitors.

But as someone above said HDMI is not any better than DVI. Every single one of my monitors is hooked up using DVI, none of them using hdmi and pretty sure most of them have an hdmi port. Actually I think my smallest monitor might be using the hdmi cord. Was the shortest cord and that monitor was closest to tower thus why I used it for that.  Each monitor is minimum 1080p resolution or 1920x1080.  I never understand peoples obsession with the word "HD" these days.  I swear they don't know what it means.  Then toss in the apple morons and their "retina" display and they would make you believe that your 1920x1080 is a black and white tv

Thing is my monitor doesn't have built in speakers so I connect RCA cables to this deck i have.

I bought this cable before consulting here: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/For-Xbox-360-PS3-5-Ft-HDMI-to-3-RCA-VGA-15-Pin-Converter-Cable-5Feet-1080p-Gold-/380546671966?pt=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item589a59655e

Claims it works for PS3. I need those RCA cables for sound.

Will this solution work? I checked and my monitor is HDCP compliant if that means anything.

A fried of mine ended up buying a whole new monitor after buying a PS3 because he could not get any adapters or DVI-HDMI cables to work.

yeah for my xbox, the cable I have splits the video and sound. So the VGA is for video on the monitor and I have two RCA cables which I connect to a deck.

Most monitors have a headphone jack, even the early cheap TN panels.
DVI can carry sound too, so if you have a headphone jack, just output the sound from there using a cable like this:

If you can try to avoid VGA, it's got allot of noise being an old analogue source.
