Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What happens with XBOX ONE content usage after the XBOX ONE is done?

Any idea what will happen after the XBOX ONE is done, and they have moved beyond the ONE to something else?  Is there any guarantee that the content you bought will be playable on the next console, or even if the XBOX ONE consoles will still work, and they keep the authentication servers up?  Or, will they patch the system so you they don't need to check the authentication servers which they then could eliminate?

Anyone have any idea what Microsoft would do?  Or is it, as people tend to say, by this time, your games you buy no won't matter anyhow, because who plays old games these days, right?

There is no guarantee that there will be any usability.

That is the point in the discussion that everyone is missing.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I would imagine that given the strategy, they are going to keep these servers around, well, forever, so that whatever comes next, in 30-40 years will be accessible from the cloud.
Who knows though? Seems ambitious and costly. For one, what happens if you discontinue your live service? How long until accounts are deleted? And howabout the permabans that get handed out so generously by MS?
Like, what happens if you register your CoD and then you get permabanned?

A software update would fix this problem. The day the system is discontinued (or for whatever other reasons there is a change of plan) those recstrictions will simply be disabled and xbox one will be usable offline.

I am trying remember what YouTube video or article made mention of this to me, and brought it to my attention.  It might of been TotalBiscuit for what I recall.  It has been nagging at myself at this point, so I am curious.  It looks like the industry has very little interest in allowing content to be held onto and used.  Backwards compatibility is gone (outside of Nintendo and PC).  They want to keep reselling the same content, to be able to justify keeping studios going.   And if they are going to end up going cloud with everything and having games that MUST connect to servers to play, then you will end up owning nothing at all and keep paying the tollkeeper.  I have no idea what Microsoft is planning here.  Sony looks like the idea is to pay a subscription fee and access old content via streaming from the cloud.

Any, I am curious if people do have any answers.  Can people stop a minute and think about this here?  Myself, I am a gamer who buys content to keep it (that is what I see about boardgame stuff.  There is no X hours of gameplay here).   And, as per your username also, I also see you have a retro angle to yourself to.

Don Mattrick said playing old games was "backwards" so I'd assume that a good 10ish years for XB1, after that who knows? 360 looks to be supported around 10 years.

It's just that simple.

That right there is my biggest problem with the system. I still have ps1 game and played through Vagrant Story again only a few months ago. Won't be able to do the same for the one games. I guess hackers would most likely crack the thing anyway.
