I believe the Direct and the trailer of many memes (mostly just inserting various songs :P) helped re-energized consumers on the hype for Smash Ultimate. Say what you want about Ultimate getting too much attention, but I don't blame Nintendo for doing that. With a rather lopsided year (Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, Nintendo Labo, Super Mario Party, and Pokemon Let's Go being the only made-for-Switch exclusive games this year, along with many ports and Octopath Traveler), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was meant to be the big title, considering the other development teams are hard at work on other projects in the meantime (i.e., Yoshi's Crafted World, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Gen 8, and Animal Crossing 2019). Nevertheless, it more than deserved it, considering the incredible roster we are about to have. This is akin to Avengers: Infinity War and Justice League Unlimited, possibly the biggest (and greatest) crossover roster in the history of gaming. Add World of Light among other features, Smash Bros. Ultimate is poised to do really well, hopefully even beyond its predecessors.
