Wow Mario games don't seem to get many pre-orders at all, are they not big in Japan?

In a case like this it's more that COMG pre-orders are not representative of Japanese game sales as a whole. Mario isn't as front-loaded as some games and the COMG clientele seem to be more Sony-centric. See also: Dragon Quest XI 3DS & PS4 COMG pre-orders vs actual sales.

3D Mario is not really all that popular in Japan. 2D Mario is a different story. When NSMBWii came out over there it outsold Mario Galaxy in like two weeks if I remeber correctly.

Mario is honestly just not a frontloaded franchise. It is the franchise with the best legs. And no Mario is massive in Japan although the 3D titles aren't as warmly recieved there as they are here in the west

It's relative. 2D Mario generally sells better but to say that 3D Mario "is not all that popular" is disingenuous. 3D Land sold over 2 million in Japan which is a lot there. Only a few franchises like MonHun, Pokémon, Yokai Watch, Animal Crossing, and other Mario games can beat that on 3DS, and there's not a single PS4 game that has even come close. Looks like there aren't even any PS3 games over 2 million.

When I say it is not all that popular I mean in relative terms 
3D mario is popular just not AS popular as 2D mario.

That much is true. Makes me wonder what kind of 2D Mario they're cooking up for Switch.
