I actually do believe that Splatoon may be the biggest IP in Japan. But the difference in popularity isn't quite as big as the attach rato suggests. Otherwise we may as well pretend that some Nintendo IP's are bigger than GTAV lol.

Pokémon easily is the biggest IP in Japan, but Splatoon is the newest hot IP and the 2nd installment often is the biggest seller of a hot new IP

GT combined got +2, not +4.

This again... I need to bring up the receipts to shut it down. But all I have to say is: THE PSP IS A HANDHELD, WII IS A CONSOLE. Of course there was going to be a decline from Freedom/What not to Tri, and Tri is still the BEST SELLING CONSOLE MH GAME.

The franchise did not decline much further because it gained more relevance with the 3U and 4 release on 3DS; both within Japan AND OVERSEAS.

And I 100% agree with the user that mentioned how much the industry has declined, its true and truly funny how people get over analytical because the PS4 sells 24k then 27k. But DO keep in mind that 1m+ IS impressive for this day and age. Smash 3DS did it and it was glorious, Dragon Quest games will surely do it too (*SKUS combined though).

You can argue slightly more relevance overseas (although the difference between what PSP entries sold and what 3DS entries sold is very little), but in Japan, that statement is false. Less sales =/= more relevance ever.

and no defense of the decline of the industry from me. I will always consider that in comparisons and it's why nothing with ever come close to MHP3 from Capcom.

Only one PSP MH title sold more than 4 million, THREE MH 3DS games have sold more than 4 million. Mind you MH 4 was only released in Japan after the huge decline the market saw. Capcom bothered to localize 3U for Wii U because Tri did better than any PS2 title, and they didn't bother to localize the PS3 HD ports.

Heck, the next main line entry in the series is aimed at overseas markets. Not because they need it, but because the demand exists. Also keep in mind that MH4 probably could've gone past 5 million had they not announced 4U.

OT: Wow at the Top 3. This is getting interesting.

Good Splatatatata

I don't get it. Most people in this thread just check the numbers and post one or two sentences basically saying "Insane/huge day for *insert game*!"

Very few of the posts in this thread are particularly insightful, including your own, and including mine, so why are you singling out Kerotan for this? Don't throw stones in a house of glass.

Amazon thread is similar one.

I guess you don't like this thread.

Teeqoz was calling out guiduc's hypocrisy of mocking Kerotan's post, while having similarly unsubstantial posts himself this thread

your conclusion has so little to do with that Teeqoz wrote, it's disturbing

In defense of us all we get daily updates on this thread so it's hard to keep our posts fresh they will inevitably become repetive especially if you only care about 2 or 3 of the games on the chart.

Anyway tbone is right. Splatoon is the new biggest ip in japan. DQ11, pokemon and monster hunter shouldn't come close to splatoon 2.

Animal Crossing might challenge it but who knows.

Guys im jk with splatoon being the biggest ip. If it will be its yet to be seen.

But Definetly top 4 is pokemon/dq/ac/mh no doubt.

YW could of been in the top 5 but we all know where thats going. Lol

Splatoon has potential to do anywhere between 3mil-6mil. If it does do 5mil+ then we are Definetly looking at a top 3 ip of japan

What data are you using? According to VGC, not a single 3DS MH SKU came even close to 4M in Japan, let alone three! PSP had 2 individual SKUs selling over 4M.

Combined with expansions per platform, MH4 + Ultimate barely outsold MH Portable 2nd + 2nd G. But that's just because MH peaked after 2nd G came out. The actual player-base of MH4 in Japan is probably signficiantly smaller than Portable.

Do keep in mind that PSP MH games were only tracked for 3-5 years.

Capcom's own Financial data:

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/finance/million.html

Only Portable 3rd stands above 4 million, while MH4/4U/X stand above 4 million. Yes the latter two were localized and P3rd wasn't, but so wasn't MH4 and it still sold over 4 million copies in Japan alone.

That Capcom data is actually quite interesting, although they only provide a number with not much details. Still a recommended read though!
