Forums - Sony Discussion - Realtime Ray Tracing in Killzone Shadow Fall

Calling ray tracing to this approximation is misleading, but it seems that you are ok with being mislead by Sony developers. It's like saying the 2004 ATI X800 subsurface scattering demo is raytraced, because they used an approximation with depth maps to raytracing on translucent surfaces. I know you like your PR catchphrases, but anyone with a bit of knowledge can smell the bullshit from a distance.

"it is definitely misleading when the idea of a ray-based renderer, the wonderful future tech of tomorrow-land, is being talked about in use now. Without a reason to develop some new naming convention for non-intersect straight line evaluations and whatever approximations and shortcuts there are, I expect the confusion to escalate."

Oh God... it is not PR... it is a developer session.

There are no bullshit in this video or news... there are using ray-tracing in real time reflexion... the OP is pretty clear about that... Crysis 2/3 use that for the same pourpose too.

There are no confusion here... please stop.

They are doing an approximation, do you understand the word approximation? Read the Beyond3D thread, not only the first post. That technique was used even on the Stalker games, several years ago. Full pipeline raytracing is the holy grial of graphics, is an aberration to call this raytracing. Is like saying FXAA is a mathematically correct antialiasing filter, when it's nothing more than a blur filter.

PS: The op text is a quote of a guy who doesn't understand what he is talking about, and is corrected by several users on the same thread

PS2: When you are doing raytracing, you don't need pre-baked lightmaps, or cubemaps, or any way to emulate the lightning, as the raytracing provides all the lightning info you need.

PS3: Read this and you will undestand a bit more of this "Raytracing" (lol) technique: http://www.crydev.net/viewtopic.php?p=800381&sid=beacf2e088e9916e133b90970b4521d1#p800381

I really dont understand why u all argue with ethomaz when he just talks certain facts.

It certainly looks lovely and very natural. This particular part of the Jimmy Fallon demo stood out to me when I watched it, now I know what the effect is.

I see but nobody is expecting a real raytracing use... it is only for some little effects ... thanks for share the link.

Well for me looks weird like video codec compression.
