it sold 100 million units, number 1 selling console this gen, whether you can sleep well at night with that fact or not.

I would hardly claim it as a fad. It was just different and everyone tried to get a piece of the pie with rip offs like move and kinect. and they did well too.

it sold 40 million units, number 1 selling album in the 90's, whether you can sleep well at night with that fact or not.

I would hardly claim Backstreet Boys were a fad. (Oh wait I would in a heart beat)

Compare Mellenium with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon or Jackson's Thriller (both selling 30 years after release) and you will see who were the fads.

This is an interesting argument. You are basically saying that pretty much every hardcore game on the HD consoles is a fad, because it opens strong and drops to bargain prices within months (sometimes weeks) of release. Consequently, the hardcore gamer is a person who is constantly chasing after fads.

What a terrible counter point. You think the albums I listed that weren't fads didn't slow down? You don't think when Rodger Waters
puts out an album it opens with higher sales and drops off? What an awful counter point... you can do better than that

Why do you act as if being a fad had negative connotation to it?

Only one I see acting like that is you or the guy i originally quoted

Do you agree that the typical hardcore games are fads? After all, they fit the definition of "fad". They are only a hot item for a very brief period of time before they start to sell for a fraction of their original price.

Honestly, youre strugglin' and your points make no sense. The sales of a single game doesn't indicate it being a fad and I have no clue why you would assume so unless you are desperatly trying to make a point

no, because usually those games have a successor that sees comparable or even more success

one hit wonders are fads

The fact that Just Dance is in the charts every week all year means it wasn't a fad in my honest opinion, it just appeals to a different audience. Plus motion controls have become a staple with mobile games and apparently Xbox 720. If you want to call it a fad I won't object but you might as well count the PSP as a fad as well because it seems like the craze of owning a portable Playstation is over.

Exactly.

In a way yes. That doesn't have to mean something negative though.

You called the Backstreet Boys a fad. They had more than one successful album though.

So far your definition of a fad comes down to whether or not you like the product in question and that's not a good definition.

On a related note, do you consider the PSP a fad?

I don't think you know what you are talking about honestly. None of their albums came close to Mellenium and their success was (very) short lived. '96 - '01 by '05 when they released their next album they dropped off the face of the earth

Five years is still a longer time of success than most artists enjoy. If you use the Backstreet Boys as a benchmark for fad, then a lot of hardcore games are fads too. Most IPs don't enjoy success for more than a single generation (approximately five years) before they drop off into oblivion.

So what about the PSP?

I don't know anything about the PSP. I havent touched a handheld since Game Boy Color first came out and all I had was a pokemon.

As for the games I really think you don't know what a fad is. I mean for fuck sake you need to first be popular in order to be called a fad and I don't think any games really qualify that except games like CoD, GTA, Mario, GT, Halo, FF... GoW with 5mil sales on a console with 160mil user base really wouldn't qualify along with Uncharted

The games I listed have sold 10+ mil. and have been popular for decades

It was, and to an extent DS also. The Wii clearly shows the true Nintendo's potential as the only company in the industry able to do those kind of achievements.

It is still a mistery what kind of sickness invaded their brain with the 3ds and Wii U.
