Wii itself, no. But the motion gaming kinda was. Most fell for it, but for everyone game that did it right, there were 20 that just sucked. No one really cares about it much. Kinect brought it to the forefront but that fizzled even faster. Im going to sound like a Sony fanboy but screw it, i like their approach. They didnt try to cram it everywhere, they made it an option and not a some dog and pony show, which IMHO it should have always been like that. Sure it doesnt move units and its not sexy. But you get a nice variety anyway. I for one will be playing Bioshock with motion controls.

it sold 100 million units, number 1 selling console this gen, whether you can sleep well at night with that fact or not.

I would hardly claim it as a fad. It was just different and everyone tried to get a piece of the pie with rip offs like move and kinect. and they did well too.

it sold 40 million units, number 1 selling album in the 90's, whether you can sleep well at night with that fact or not.

I would hardly claim Backstreet Boys were a fad. (Oh wait I would in a heart beat)

Compare Mellenium with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon or Jackson's Thriller (both selling 30 years after release) and you will see who were the fads.

how many games at present or in the near future that are known to us support motion controls as the main form of input?....

ok there you go that's your answer

No, but motion gaming was.

Its the reason why the Wii, PS Move and Kinect had such a massive drop off in sales. Once everybody got past the wow factor - "wow I can actually use my body to control the game!", nobody gave two shits about it. The casuals got bored and went to mobile games instead and the other gamers went back to playing with a normal controller.

Look the bell curve sales - indicative of a fad. Now the thing is, it was a fad for casual gamers, and simply not relevant to core gamers which has meant nintendo are now going to struggle to get the core gamer back as they have time invested into either XBL or PSN.

Not really - there's plenty of papers on the notion of what a fad is e.g:

To an extent, yea

Off course it is, no fad would ever outsell a real console.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Yes, the Wii was partially a fad. I don't see why anyone would really argue that. It was bought by a lot of people who had no prior interest in gaming, who barely played it after they bought it, and who will likely never buy another video-game console again.

Now, is that saying that the Wii wasn't a good console outside of it's viral sales? Not at all. It's merely acknowledging the idea that, for many people, it was a product of passing interest.

Motion controls in general might also be a fad, though I think we're going to have to wait to see how popular it is with the new Xbox model. However, I do believe that more people have fallen off the motion controls bandwagon than are likely to join it in the future.
