Forums - Sony Discussion - Nvidia bitterness continues, compares PS4 specs to a 'low-end CPU'

I wasn't going to comment on this. Don't really feel like getting into a war of words with people who are mega pro PC. But this guy is imo clearly doing Damage Control right now.

Certainly he is smarter than the comments he made. To compare next gen consoles to low level PC's is silly. Don't agree? Then provide a link to that $400 PC the runs circles around the PS4.

Comparing console specs to PC is silly. Specs in a gaming console go further than in a desktop PC. Consoles have an unfair advantage in a comparison like that. PC's have to do much more than just gaming

This guy or these guys know all that. Even if they don't want to say that.

Does Nvidia have anything similar to the APUs ?

Yes.
nVidia Tegra, however it's targeted at the ultra low-power market. Aka. Tablets and Phones.
However, it's not far-fetched to say they couldn't engineer say... A Geforce 660/670 with a 16 Core (Or more) ARM processor all in one package to drop into a console.
Just unfortunatly the CPU performance of ARM chips leaves much to be desired as they have an even lower IPC per core than Intels Atom, which AMD's Jaguar leaves both in the dust due to it's OOO design.

Isn't Tegra a line of GPUs for mobile devices ?

It's a CPU and GPU and chipsets aswell as other logic all on the same die. Aka. SoC or "System on a Chip".
AMD's APU's are essentially the same without the chipset and other logic and uses a CISC x86 for the processor.

There's also another important point: x86 has had also 64bit versions for almost 10 years now, since the first Athlon 64, while ARM 64bit versions are very recent and not widespread, and you need more than 32bit to address more than 4GB RAM directly without inefficient workarounds. As smartphones and tablets still use mostly 32bit versions, a 64bit ARM-NVidia APU couldn't enjoy the same economies of scale of an x86 one. Also, as you wrote, ARM up until now has had very low power consumption, but low computing power versions for tens years, and hasn't been scaled up again to desktop or notebook PC or home console computing power levels yet, last time ARM had versions comparable or more powerful than competing x86 CPUs was in its first years, when it was used in the first RISC personal computer, the Archimedes (back then it ate Motorola 68k CPUs for breakfast, not to mention the slower x86 ones).

I prefer console gaming in general. I think most people agree. The PC tends to die after a new console comes around. These new consoles always shows off great new games using new visual techniques no one has seen before. Look at Metal Gear Solid 2 for example which showed off the best lighting and rain effects seen at the time. I expect the same thing to happen with PS4 because the specs will be close to PC and the developers will invent new graphical effects no one has thought of. Just look at what Linus Blomberg says about the PS4 performance when compared to PC gaming:

“It’s a perfect fit for the types of games we do, and we are confident that we’ll bring open-world gaming to a whole new level because of it. I’m glad Sony decided to go with 8gb RAM because it means that the PS4 will out-power most PC’s for years to come."

Well.
PC games have never looked worse than the equivalent ported console games, looked equal or better though as you're not limited to only 1920x1080@60hz with bugger all AA or AF and other graphical effects.

Personally, bring on the PS4 and Xbox 720, my games would love a graphics overhaul, console ports look so old, tired and dated when 99% of them run the Unreal Engine.
I also laugh in the face of "only" 8gb of ram, I still have room to upgrade from 32gb to 64gb of ram if the need ever arises.

Anything over 16 GB of system ram wont matter for games. You know you can't use system ram for graphics right?

And we laugh in your face because you paid more for your mb alone what other people paid for their entire console?
Seriously, what is it with people comparing their $2000 game rig with a console?

LOL, he neglects to mention that a GTX680 will cost more than the entire PS4.

Good game, bro!

32 More GB of RAM that's considerably slower than the PS4's, and pointless seeing as anything over 8GB of RAM is unneeded for gaming needs, and you never need to go over 16GB of RAM, and if the time comes when you do need more, then odds are your RAM will be slower than what's currently on the market. GG.

Yeah, I do allot more than just gaming which is why I have such an amount of ram, I use it all, plus, I'm also running Quad-Channel memory, which is double the bandwidth of most other platforms using only Dual Channel DDR3.
My system Ram may be slower at only 60Gb/s, but it's also lower latency and my GPU's GDDR5 ram is almost twice as faster (At 280 - 300 Gb/s) than the PS4's, remember, it's not a shared memory architecture, so there isn't a need for a singular large pool of GDDR5 memory.

I just think it's funny how you are willing to shoe-boat how much Ram the PS3 has, but instantly put down another system which has multiples more.

If only it was $2000. My monitors alone was about that.
But, I'm willing to pay for the best for doing work, additional benefit is that it creams at gaming.
