Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is Sony planning to do with Gaikai in the long term?

I am  wondering what Sony will do with Gaikai in future. Surely it won't be limited to Playstation alone as this would keep out a lot of audience. They have to make a lot of money with it so it would make a lot of sense to offer clients to as many systems as possible, meaning smartphones, tablets, ios, android and perhaps even Windows (mobile) 8. They could, of course, just virtualize standard-PC-games but will they keep it? I always heard that companies make their money with games so why not deliver all the good games to other platforms as well? Say PS2-classics for other platforms? They don't make money with old games anymore but ppl would perhaps be willing to pay a little price for it to stream them.

What do you think are Sony's plans with Gaikai? Limited to Playstation or will they offer it to other platforms?

They said on the 20th... Long-term goals were all PS titles (includes third parties) available for streaming. All PS4 titles on PSV. GK will also be on other platforms like phones and tablets (not sure if limited to Sony products).

Looking beyond this gen it's hard to tell because the industry is quite unpredictable at this point, with all the potential transitioning going on (to streaming, DD, mobile games, PC-console hybrids etc.). If streaming really takes off I imagine GK will be the focal point of PS5, it may not even be a new box. But who knows?

*All* titles? Wow, that would be a lot ;) If they really limit it to Sony platforms it would definitely make sense to have something exclusive for their hardware but this would require to have a lot of Sony hardware floating around to earn enough money to keep the service up.

If they really want to make money they should at least offer it to Android and ios - just imagine how many users you could reach! Also keep in mind that Gaikai is by now not the only streaming service and most probably the competition will rise when it turns out to be attractive to users. If you limit your services to your own hardware ppl will choose what service is available to their existing hardware and don't buy new hardware, IMO.

And yes, I think next-next-gen will be a lot different to what is going to be released this year.

Yeah I had an idea a while back about how Sony could bring GK to android/IOS. I think it should be a free app, heavily promoting PS4/Vita, with all game previews and demos available. Could be a great marketing tool. If the full service is available to IOS/android phones it kind of invalidates PSV's position in the market, and to a lesser extent even the PS4.

World domination I believe.

But why bother for PSV, for example? It is not very successful, I doubt Sony makes any money with it. Of course in long term this would mean that Sony moves from a hardware-platform company to a software one but as I already said: rumor has it that money comes from software, not from hardware. Of course they could still make software for PS4 which would be exclusive to PS4 so that there would still be reasons to buy it (same goes with vita). I don't believe that ppl will buy Sony hardware just for their streaming-capabilities - they want the client for their existing hardware.

Gaikai if good enough internet is provied would make new consoles and PC Hardware completely unnecessary

We could even have the best PC graphics on our Smartphone.Everyone could play on Max Settings on every device - We would only need around 5MB/s constant download and stuff.
Normal internet for Consoles/PCs with enough speed should be already available everywhere in the world especially in 1st world countries. We have 100MB/s for cheap everywhere here and some companies here test even those speeds for phones out.

I think Gaikai and Sony should rule the entertainment world and spread it out over ever platform available.

I think you were spot on with your comment about phones and tablets. Also, Vita will be able to stream PS4 games.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Remember that OnLive is also in the market and there will be more most probably. Ruling could be hard :)

they should make gaikai built in with every TV they make, add in a PS4 controller bundled with every TV. that way not only will they gain a much needed edge over samsung in the TV space, they can make literally everyone who buys one of their TV a potential costumer for buying games. they should also have the service on their smartphones and tablets
