Infamous: Second Son

Sucker Punch Shares More Intel On Infamous: Second Son

In the wake of the Second Son reveal, Sucker Punch producer Brian Fleming took to the PlayStation blog to give us a clearer understanding of what the game has to offer.

Rather than rejurgitate the information, we'll just post what Fleming had to say:

"Delsin Rowe is the star of Second Son, and you probably know someone like him: A 24 year-old who is absolutely convinced he’s destined for greatness; though so far that greatness has managed to elude him. He grew up just outside Seattle, where his great – if accidental – calling comes crashing into his life. After rescuing occupants from a fiery bus wreck, he discovers that he suddenly has the ability to direct, manipulate and even transform into… smoke. Could he have absorbed this power from one of the passengers he pulled from the wreckage?

"Setting the scene: It’s been seven years since the Cole McGrath episodes and the world has clearly changed. Anyone showing signs of being a so-called “bio-terrorist” is immediately handed over to the Department of Unified Protection (DUP) — a government agency created to ensure there is never a repeat of the catastrophic events of Empire City and New Marais. So Delsin, who has never been particularly respectful of authority, finds himself caught in the DUP dragnet – and decides he’s not going to go quietly.

"Along the way, Delsin is going to ask questions that are not just relevant to the world of Second Son – but to the world we all live in today. A world where we are often instructed to surrender our freedoms to help improve our security. Ben Franklin once wrote “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Is he right?

"As you play Second Son, you’ll explore lots of Seattle’s familiar landmarks. As with all games in this series, the path the gameplay and story take will depend on the decisions you make along the way. Of course, we are creating all these characters and locations at a remarkable level of detail – made possible by PS4. In fact, this trailer was produced in-house using our game engine – can you tell we’re having fun with the new GPU, tools, and our new VFX system?"

Update #2: Visceral Montreal Employee Confirms Entire Staff Let Go

Update #2: An employee at Visceral Montreal has confirmed to us that the entire studio has been laid off.

A former employee at Visceral Montreal who has asked to remain anonymous has confirmed that the entire studio has been let go. Earlier today an EA representative confirmed that EA Montreal had been subject to layoffs, but wouldn't comment on the extent of the firings or which studios were affected. Our source's comments fall in line with earlier rumors that Visceral Montreal has been closed entirely following the completion of The Devil's Cartel.

Our thoughts go out to Visceral Montreal's employees.

Update #1: An EA representative has passed along the company's official statement on the layoffs.

Today EA internally announced some adjustments to select development teams to align staff and skills against priority growth areas, including new technologies and mobile. Many employees are being retrained for new positions; however a small number will be released. These are great, talented people and we wish them well. EA is growing globally, and we expect our headcount to increase this year.

EA also stressed that Visceral Redwood Shores, the flagship studio of Visceral Games and developer of Dead Space, has not been impacted by the layoffs, which has been a source of confusion on Twitter. In regards to Visceral Montreal, the representative stated the following: "EA Montreal is a key development studio where our long-term plan is to sharpen our teams' focus on consoles and mobile games."

EA also confirmed with us that EA Montreal is not shutting down, but couldn't comment on the overall state of the Visceral Montreal team.

The video game industry is reeling from news of more layoffs, this time at Army of Two developer Visceral Montreal.

While Kotaku is reporting that the entire studio may have been shut down, EA is only confirming the company has "let some people go" in its Los Angeles and Montreal branches, according to a blog post by EA Labels president Frank Gibeau. Visceral Montreal's current game, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, is set to release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 26. We visited the developer for our cover story on The Devil's Cartel, and walked away impressed by the talent and enthusiasm of the staff, which we highlighted in this studio profile video.

We have reached out to Electronic Arts for clarification on the layoffs and will update the story when we learn more.

Oddworld Developer Just Add Water Working On PlayStation 4 Game

The company behind the HD remakes of Stranger's Wrath and Munch's Oddysee has confirmed that it has signed on to develop games for PlayStation 4.

In a blog post on the Just Add Water website, a company representative wrote:

"By now you'll have eagerly lapped up all the information from the Sony PlayStation announcement. You'll have seen our name in the list of confirmed developers. We're delighted to finally be able to tell you that JAW are developing for the Sony PlayStation 4. We can't talk about what we're working on just yet. Just be assured it'll be worth the wait."

Just Add Water has previously said that it is working on two upcoming projects in the Oddworld universe, the strategy game Hand of Odd and a remake of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. It's not known whether those projects are bound for PlayStation 4, but we would not be surprised to see them make an appearance on Sony's new console.

  • Moments – Picking Up Guitar Hero

    15

I clearly remember my first time playing Guitar Hero. I had only been at Game Informer for a couple of years in 2005, and I’d made it clear to my co-workers that I had an intense enthusiasm for all those quirky Japanese music games. I also adored the work from a little developer called Harmonix, who had crafted my favorite music game to date: Amplitude. I embraced the trance-like state I’d fall into as I played the game, desperately tapping buttons in time with the beats and switching back and forth between tracks. More

The heyday of music game blockbusters may be on the wane, but there was something magical about the first time playing that little toy guitar.

Wait, if I'm reading that right (I don't use twitter) he's saying that was mostly gameplay footage, just using different camera angles?  If so, then wow.
