i don't have an external hard drive plugged into my WiiU and it still freezes on the menu screen.

Have you updated it completely? I've had zero since the December update and its played daily.... a lot on weekends.

No didn't update anything. Does it matter ??

You're either trolling me or ....

I thought the Update was so you can play Wii games. Didn't know that it solves the freezing problem.

No problem here. It's gathering dust just fine.

Mine doesn't...gots lots of fun using it with Trine 2, ZombieU, Darksiders2, Ninja Gaiden: RE, and NSMB:U.  In addition, using my Netflix has never been easier than it has been since the Wii U.  Try buying the basic, it's only $299 (I got the Deluxe) a great deal for a new gen system.

How does playing games on the Wii U stop the system from gathering dust?

I know... mine is played daily yet its a dusty mofo. Damn glossy black.

C'mon we all know what Galaki meant/implying you guys are not that dim. What does dust have to do with the hard drive anyways?  For any matter everything gathers dust so no need to mention it unless you would like to troll!!!

Surely you know Galaki better than this.

The problem is most likely your hard drive and not the update actually. I had the same issue. The problem is Wii U USB ports are USB 2.0. If you have a bus powered hard drive (no external power supply) then it is a USB 3.0 device.

USB 3.0 increased the current that could be provided by each port, which basically allows for bus-powered drives. If you use one on the Wii U, it will draw too much current, the drive will shut down, and the Wii U will lock up sometimes.

It's easily solvable while still using your same drive though. You need to get (or make, as I made a post about a few months back) what is called a y-cable. Nintenod spoke about this a while ago. This allows you to connect the device to 2 of the USB port, providing double the current draw potential. They are very cheap and easy to find online and I have not had an issue since I connected my drive with one.

Note this is different from a "Y-adapter" which will allow you to connect 2 devices to one port. You want 2 male USB ends combining into a single female. Here is an example of what you want:

Im using a Y Cable anyway. So if youre using a Y cable and its still locking up then disable the standby option on your harddrive
