The Board Game Inspired By Video Games

There are plenty of video games based on board games. And board games based on video game properties. But a board game genuinely inspired by video games? Please, Rivet Wars, continue.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given this pitch, the game is the brainchild of Ted Terranova, a former developer at Big Huge Games (Rise of Nations) who has taken that RTS experience and turned it into one of the most interesting ideas for a board game I've seen in ages.

Rivet Wars borrows two key elements from games; the goal is to capture command points which let you create more units, while the units themselves can be upgraded and customised not with cards or tokens, but by literally attaching things to their little plastic turrets.

The whole thing has a wonderful First World War aesthetic, somewhere between Toy Soldiersand Iron Brigade.

Rivet Wars is a Kickstarter project, but before you go thinking this is a pitch post—or that this will likely never be made—know Terry only asked for $20,000, and has received over $160,000 in backing. So far.

I'm pretty excited by this, though I love miniature games. CoolOrNotMini is publishing this and they also published Super Dungeon Explore which was really good (and made to be like an old console game, specifically Gauntlet) and had great mini's.

$90 is the lowest amount to back this game and receive a copy which sounds like a lot but for a miniature game it's a pretty standard price.

Well all my gaming lately is with a group of 4-5 so this won't really work for us but I'll have to look into that Super Dungeon Explore game you mentioned.

...

Looks cool. The perfect game to play when you don't have the time or energy to play a game of Warhammer.

There's a good video series called Watch It Played that does a good job of explaining it.  I played a few games without watching that first and I was doing quite a few things wrong.  Unfortunately it has one of those rule books that doesn't explain things too well and it's super easy to miss things (and I know it wasn't just me because everyone else I know made the same mistakes too ).

As of this post the game is at $222k with 18 days to go!

That means we're getting this stretch goal--

And we'll probably get these--

I'm getting more and more excited for this game. :)
