Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Nintendo be Releasing a New Home Console in the Next 2 to 3 Years?

EdHieron said:

If you look at the history of Nintendo and their consoles, you see that they tend to release new consoles that lag behind in technology, them release newer consoles only a few  years down the road ( see Gameboy Color, followed by Gameboy Advance, then DS all coming out roughly in the space of five years).

This console gen they discovered that a new console aimed at the right audience ( largely nongamers) and at the right price can become a fad and make them a lot of profit in the short run but be doomed to failure in the long run.  See Wii's position in the marketplace the last two years since it simply didn't have the hardware to compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3.

More than likely we will see a similar situation occurring in the next two years when Sony and Microsoft release their new consoles.  Wii U ( which has already shown that it doesn't have the same level of demand that the Wii and 360 had at their launches) can conceivably do well against Microsoft and Sony's upcoming consoles in its first year as it will be getting by on ports from the 360 and PS3 during the short term whereas Microsoft and Sony's next consoles' lineups may not be all that impressive at launch.  However by the Second Christmas for the follow ups to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 all the True flashiest and most anticipated next gen games will be launching for 720 and PS4 and the vast majority of them will be far superior to any Wii U versions in much the same way that 360 and PS3 versions were to their Wii counterparts (the few that were released).  Yet with more consumer friendly pricepoints for their new consoles than their predecessors had in addition to still maintaining the power to make Wii U look as obsolete as 360 and PS3 made the Wii look, market penetration of the 720 and PS4 will be much more rapid than it was for 360 and PS3.

In effect, Christmas 2014 will be in favor of 720 and PS4 versus Wii U just as much as Christmases 2011 and 2012 were for 360 and PS3 versus Wii.

So, do you expect Nintendo to launch the successor to Wii U in 2015?

lol dude just stop it. Every post you have written here in vgchartz is pure bullshit. No one is going to take you seriously if you continue on this path.

Bet with ninjablade:

Ninjablade wins if the next 5 multiplat on the wii u are inferior to the 360 version.

I win if one of the 5 mulitplats are on par or superior on the Wii U.

This is all I read. Why? The first sentence is already wrong. They launched a system which lagged behind in technology (power-wise at least) only once.

OT (judging from the title): No, not until at least 2017.

2017 is the obvious year given Wii U came about a year late. Also, 2-3 years is ridiculous, aside from 2D Mario, Nintendo has not even released any major titles yet. Outside of 2D Mario and Wii Fit, Nintendo has not even revealed any of their major titles yet.

Do you expect Wii Fit U to be a major title? I think it's possible the franchise drops off quite a bit like Brain Training or Nintendogs.

NES Versus PC Engine and Sega Master System;, Gameboy Versus PC Express and Atari Jaguar, Gameboy Color versus Neo Geo Pocket Color, Gameboy Advance Versus N-Gage, DS ( all iterations) versus PSP, Wii Versus 360 and Playstation 3, 3DS versus Vita and IOS, and Android Devices, Wii U versus Orbis and Durango.  In all those instances Nintendo had the inferior technology.

The only times they've had comparable or better technology were Super Nintendo ( lacked external CD-Rom Drive), N64 ( lacked CD-Rom Drive)  Gamecube ( lacked DVD).

New DS will be announced this year, that's what I think, they seem to go with it every 2-3 years.

DS (2004)
DS Lite (2007)
DSi (2009)
3DS (2011)

The DS ones are just console revisions, like PS2 fat and slim, PS3 fat, slim and super slim, the X360 versions, etc. He is talking about a sucessor, like Wii-Wii U. About the OP, simply no, they won't. They don't replaced Gamecube and that was a worst case scenario.

Even if Wii U fail, it's better to wait and plan the gen after. Releasing consoles earlier to fix problems with you current one is a bad idea. Sega did it and things only got worse. You lose your credibility. Besides that, even if Wii U doesn't succeds, it will still sell a good amount and will be enough for the next 6 years at least.

There are two possible ways for Microsoft and Sony next-gen:

1: They will release an ultra powerful console, therefore so expensive no one's gonna buy it, certainly not in these days. Also, powerful consoles demand for beautiful games which are too expensive for most companies nowadays to make a profit on it.

2: They will release a more casual platform with forced casual games and accessories like the Kinect and Move. But casual gamers already lost interest in gaming after the Wii. Also not gonna work for them.

Why are these to only two options? The first option is an extreme, the second is getting there. Why not a moderately powerful console with a focus on hardcore gaming, but tries to cater to the casual audience as well?

Yeah I know, its like if they make one kinda like the Wii U.............O.o

Blahblahblah. All were in the same ballpark.

Lagging behind =/= slightly less powerfull than their competitor (and ahead of others I might add). Lagging behind happened only once.

Besides the ones i higlight. The rest did not lag behind in technology.

Just because they are slightly weaker than their competition doesnt mean they lagged behind in technology.

By your logic ps1 lagged behind in technology, so did the ps2 and even the xbox 360.

Your argument is flawed.

How about no!.... 5-6 years like all the time... please don't start this new Nintendo console in 2-3 years crap, we already had to put up with that bullshit from pachter.through the whole Wii;s life. maybe they re-release the controller like they do with the DS's, 3DS's and gameboys. but that's about it they will do.

Motion Control proved to be popular for Wii during that time, but once Kinect released, it took away the only ace in the hole the Wii had, so you see it being the first console of its time ( not of its Gen there's a difference) to die off despite its early sales.  So comparing Wii U and Wii that way is like comparing apples and oranges.  Really the closest analogues to Wii U are Dreamcast, Xbox 1 ( during the time when it was called "Portbox" by detractors as Wii U will mainly be getting slightly spiffier ( if they manage to turn out better than Arkham City) ports from PS3 and 360 prior to the release of the Next Gen consoles) or maybe the Gamecube if it had been released a year earlier ( though the horsepower difference between Wii U and the Next Gen consoles will be more like the difference between 360 / PS3 and Wii than it was during the 6th Gen).

That's because Just Dance 4 for XBox is outselling Just Dance for Wii, right?

I always try to be calm with ignorant posts full, but this one got me wondering if "How about you use your brain" is too offensive?

I wouldn't call the Wii U a "moderately powerful" console in 2013. It's marginally more powerful than powerful consoles from 2006. PS4 and 720 being moderately powerful would be significantly more powerful than the Wii U, smaller gap than wii-HD twins, but bigger than ps2-xbox. People define "moderately" and "marginally" in different ways so I'll expand on that if you want.

I still don't get your point with this reply though, it's not like I out-ruled them making a similar console to the Wii U, so why the "O.o"?
