Sure, as some posts in this thread already pointed out. WiiU is already saved playing Wii-games.

Yes, but no.
The patent suggests a flat expansion module that would slide onto the back of a console. It would look like it was a part of the console and blended into it, rather than an obtrusive lump.
The module idea never really made sense with the PS2 backward compatibility in the PS3, because if Sony wanted to put the effort into it they could have developed software compatibility, however with the PS4 and PS3 backward compatibility is an intelligent and elegant solution.

Sure the patent is somehow different - just wanted to show that most "new" ideas have been engineered long ago and are not new ideas. Not offending, of course. And I have to disagree: A PS3-hacker once stated that a full-feature emulator on PS3 but i can't find the link now.
But read this: http://wololo.net/2012/11/13/has-sony-resumed-ps2-emulation-on-the-ps3/ especially the "sum up".

Sony invented BC so I hope you're kidding.
NO!
NO NO NO NO NO!!!
I've had NES, Megadrive, PSOne, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, Wii, PS3, 360, and I've NEVER seriously played old games on new hardware before.
COME ON - use your head here - if you have a ton of PS3 games then you have a PS3 too.
______
If Sony released an "Elite" version of PS4 with PS3 playback for an extra $100, HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD PICK THAT UP!?
YEah, thought so.
Stop being sentimental - it happens every single gen.

Oh no, he is definitely not! Look at my post above. Genesis was able to run games from Master System. There also was an adapter called Tristar for N64.
backwards compatibility would be great, I still play my PS1 games and PS2 games alot and theres great games coming out during 2013 that people will still want 2 play once the PS4 is launched for battle.
