Forums - Sony Discussion - why sony releases last of us on ps3

sony wants people to continue buying ps3s, obviously. The ps3 is likely making a profit, given the lack of pricedrop with the slim. Lots of companies kept supporting the ps2 when ps3 arrived and several big sony first party games were released shortly before ps3 dropped.
Source: Ps2 shipped an additional 50m consoles after ps3 released.

i am not saying to not support ps3 but as i mentioned instead of releasing all these 4 on ps3 (sly4, god of war, last of us and beyond two souls) they could release 3 of them on ps3 and for example last of us or god of war on ps4 . wouldn't that be a better plan ?

You're forgetting that these games have likely been in development for 2-3 years.

They've also already been announced for ps3.

All the art assets are ps3 level graphics.

It simply isn't feasible to put them on ps4. Just look at ff13. FF13 was going to be released on ps2. Was in development for a long time, then had to be redone. The entirety of the ff13 corruption stems from doing exactly what you are suggesting Sony do.

I know they still want to support ps3 but they are releasing too many good games next year on ps3 so if they want to sell ps4 they need at least one system seller. why would i buy ps4 when i can buy god of war, sly4, byond two souls and last of us on ps3, i don't see a reason to buy another console.

Ding ding ding! Wouldn't it be amazing if Sony's master plan was to NOT release a new console next year? Just keep raking in the profits from software sales, Sony. No hurry!

i am not saying they should now release it on ps4 instead of ps3 it is too late for that. from the beginning they could of think that last of us from naughty dog could be a system seller so lets make it for ps4 instead of ps3. i know right now it is too late release it on ps4. Still sony might have a cool game for launch of ps4 who knows.

I dunno if you're one of those people who actually thinks ps4 won't be out, but it will be. If not holiday 2013, then February 2014.

Two reasons as I see it
1. Sony has no issues with lack of first party games. They can easily afford to. Plenty of teams (including the other ND team) are working on other games. I have no doubt there will be plenty from them for the ps4

2. Going into the next gen strong. Ending the gen with some strong software will allow the ps3 to keep selling for a good while and also bring as many core gamers on board as they can for the next console.

i think last of us or god of war can be a system seller for sony. Assume you can only play last of us on ps4 that makes some people to buy the console on day one. look at wii u which has the new super mario  which you can't play on wii and you have to buy wii u if you wanna play it.

so what do you think guys ?

How about establishing Last of Us as a franchise and then releasing Last of Us 2 on the PS4?  The reality is there is very little in the way of new IP that ends up selling consoles these days.

don't worry buddy. think about Sonys heavy hitters from PS3. those are the games that's gong to be on PS4.

PS3 is the platform to establish an ip, and that's wht all the new games coming out in 2013 on PS3 are doing. it's like the cost to get in, and PS3 is security, or proving ground.

Sony is not the only company making games for the ps4. They don't really have to worry that much. Generally at launch you never see huge games...it usually takes about a year.

If Last of Us is hugely successful, then it will likely see a sequel on ps4. They are likely making a new battle royale for ps4, and uncharted to come out around 6 months after launch. That's usually how it goes with these kinds of things. Too early on, the price barrier keep people from buying consoles for a single big game, and limits itself in install base. It's almost a waste of money.

A better idea is to sell consoles that are making margin profit with those games, keep the programming cost down, and sell to an install base of 70m.

I know it seems awkward, but there will be some games, nothing spectacular, but there generally never is. PS4 will be fine regardless, Sony has learned their lessons of slow starts.

how about god of war they could of release that on on ps4, seriously i don't know what they wanna release with ps4 they only games that i think sony can release are Last Gaurdian and GT6( the chance of releasing gt6 is less than 50%)

also i think new ips can sell really good on new systems especially when you know a great developer is behind it ( look at resistance and motorstorms they were new ips and they sold extremelly well)
