Forums - Gaming Discussion - Latest report shows global Win Phone growth, strong Nokia comeback in the UK

Hmm, I wonder if the new iphone release had anything to do with Android dropping in marketshare in the US? Lol. I'm sure Android will be right back up there in a quarter or two. As for MS slight uptick in marketshare, I'm sure that has to do with the W8 release, as well. We'll have to see where they sit at in a quarter or two, just like Apple/Android.

Meh, MSFT is still expected to grow at 6 or seven percent, which isn't great at all. Seven percent would be just fine for a stodgy old industrial kind of company.  for tech companies in particular, they are growing much slower than average.  They rank in the bottom 20 or 30% for software and tech, in terms of revenue growth for the past 5 years.  Again, and as companies like google and apple that hands down grow faster than Microsoft get bigger, they'll start to be able to use that size to bully msft.

Right now google is around 70 or 75% of microsofts revenue, but is growing a lot faster on a year to year basis.  In a few years, google will overtake msft if the past trends keep on going.  At that point, it will be like somebody trying to fight somebody their own size versus fighting somebody that they are bigger than which is the case as of now.

I'm not sure what you're getting at...

When youre as massive as microsoft has been for the last 15+ years it's difficult to grow at the same rate that much younger companies are. There wasnt much room for MS to grow, but now that they've diversified there is plenty of room opening up.

BS.

Apple is Over twice as big as Microsoft in terms of market cap, but it has been the wall street darling bc of its growth.  It can be done if the company has intelligent leadership.  And the diversity thing isnt a great thing necessarily, bc it throws companies in a million different directions all at once. Microsoft has had the diversity for a while anyway, so that argument can't hold up with me.  I'm glad that you have faith but at least realize that the market isn't greatly positive on Microsoft.

Last 3 months tell a different story though. Sure Apple skyrocketed for the past 2-3 years, but they lost 25% in the past 3 months.
But neither MS did that great with a 11% loss. DowJones lost about 3%.

Find these table interesting. Surpirsed Bada is considered improtant enough to get its own line, would have thought it would have been included in 'Other'. Only reason I've heard of it is is because my (just replaced) phone ran the OS.

Thank you Cyrus_ATX. So we can see that it's still nowhere despite the large percentage improvement.

Mobile devs won't be making things for three platforms with one a fifth the size of the other two, especially because of how fragmented Android already is, and that iOS needs iPads as well.

?

There are more than enough apps on all 3 platforms already.

46 of the 50 most popular iOS and Android apps are on WinPhone 8 already.
Overall, there are 120k apps available on WindowsPhone (Oct 2012). If you really need 15 different fart generators fine, but every regular user should be happy with the selection. And of course, it will grow in the future.

So no, a lot of mobile devs are making things for three platforms.

Yeah, and you can do 95% of what you want to do on Windows, on Linux. It's the last 5% of functionality or single missing app that will burn people.

I think there is way too much cash around app developers at the moment. When the bubble bursts (it's happening already), they will not be able to afford all those ports.

I agree that the bubble will burst, but I disagree with the consequences. I think app devs will have to support as many platforms as possible in the future.
Look at gaming and 3rd party exclusives these days. There are none. PS3 would have the same support if it sold just 30 million and 360 90 million (or vice versa), because developers have to try to monetise every % of the userbase they try to reach.

Microsoft and Apple are a BEAST.

No one can deny it.

WP will rise and will have great sales, it doesnt matter if its 1st or 2nd.

IOS is 2nd and they make way more money than Google and more people love and talk about iPhone everyday.

WP if sells 100m per year in 2017 it will be a great success with good maketshare.

MAC OS has 5% marketshare in Pcs and still sells.

Precisely. Apple's margins >>>> Android or Winphone margins. From the actual OS, MS and Google don't make much. Profit, unlike Apple, comes from the tie-in to their other products: search, the store, Windows 8, Win8 tablets. And Win8 is selling less than Win7 last year despite being a new OS, so it's already failed at promoting Windows.

Go and look at MS's profit for the relevant division. It's not high.
