I'm really torn between 2 and 3. I feel GOW 2 is a more consistent game, but the high points don't reach the same level of majesty as those in GoW 3.

I think I would give the slight edge to GOW 3 because the high points tend to outweigh the few marginal moments.

I am currently playing GoW 2, very good game so far. Now if only I had a better processor...

GOW3

GOW2 is really awesome, and has more variety in the scenarios, but GOW3 epicness is unmatched.

GOW 2 amplified everything to 11 so there was little room for GOW 3 to go.

GOW 2 is the best in the series for me.

This. GOW2 is an amazing game, especially given that it was produced on the PS2, however, GOW3 has some of the single-most impressive sequences I've ever seen on a video-game console.....just spectacular. I will say that the jump in quality from GOW1 to GOW2 was amazing, but I really feel the jump from GOW2 to GOW3, in terms of overall quality, is debatable.

Ghost of Sparta is so underrated, I actually prefer it in every way to God of War 2 and 3. God of war 1 is quite different to the later ones as a lot of the main gameplay elements for me, weren't in the game yet :( Chains of Olympus has a fairly poor story for me :(

Im suprised people voting GoW3, nothing beats GoW2 i my opinion.

I hated God of War. Absolutely hated it. It was a pretty but uneventful game that I felt offered a Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver styled experience (lots of puzzles but no feeling of accomplishment) and a character I didn't really feel for. I'd given up on the series with the first game. I kept hearing what people were saying about GoW 3 so I wound up buying it a year later for really cheap. Since I got GoW3 in HD, I figured I'd complete the trilogy and get the whole HD Collection.

I skipped GoW1 (because it sucks) and went straight to GoW2. The game was goddam amazing. By the time I finished, I was in awe. Then, I went to GoW3 with the idea that there was no way it would impress like GoW2 could. Once again, I was blown away!

Anyway, that's my history with God of War. I later got both of the portable games (and yet, somehow, I'm not hyped at all for Ascension. Guess I'll be blown away, again.) and Ghost of Sparta is pretty amazing, too. But, the thread is about the best overall edition and, with God of War, every game is easily better than the last. I'm going with God of War 3!

GOW III for me, I've only played GOW2 as well which I found to be a decent experience on the PS2. GOW III though, is just so unique. There's nothing that compares to the level of scale in some of those boss battles, the production values and level of polish is excellent and the gameplay for the most part is exemplary. It's really just a very memorable, very enjoyable game. 

God of war 2 because it had the best level design of the three.
