Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Rumour: Sony Files Patent For Dynamic Content Switching Between Architecturally Distinct GPUs

if the next gen is only half as fast as the rumours spreading around about the ps460 each and every day the grahics will look better than photorealistic

Dual APU and GPU and a heap of ram at a good price = win

Very fast XMB access to friends lists playlists etc is a step in the right direction and multitasking will be very important next gen, here is hoping Sony has a killer fast UI next gen.

I don't understand a word of what i have just read, but it sounds kinda cool

Interesting stuff.

That makes me think how long will it be until a studio finds a way to use both GPUs for games, like use the discrete GPU for all the graphic stuff and use the integrated one for things like physics and AI.

My guess would he developers wouldnt have access to both cards.  The APU would basically be there for things like the OS, XMB, multiple open applications and stuff.  They wouldnt want developers messing much with that in order to keep the user experience fast with low load times.

Most development would take place with just the dedicated GPU not for the one in the APU

From what I understand this is all to make multi-tasking as easy and fast as possible.

You know how accessing the XMB while playing a PS3 game is extremely slow? The game is using up all the resources which is why the XMB is so low. With the PS4, one GPU will be dedicated to XMB/apps/etc while the other more powerful one is reserved for games only. This would make switching between an App and a game smooth as butter. This is exactly what the rumor from VG247 said about accessing the PS Store while in-game.

Sounds very promising.

ya see now,.. was that so hard?!?  why can't more tech news be put in plan english but THAT i can understand.

Hm, the way I understood it (from reading the patent) it switches from high-powered to low powered (and vice versa) depending on load:

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the just-in-time compiler is configured to perform a context switch from the high power GPU to the low power GPU if the high power GPU is the active GPU and the high power GPU is operating at a processing capacity that is less than or equal to the maximum processing capacity of the low power GPU.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the just-in-time compiler is configured to perform a context switch from the low power GPU to the high power GPU if the low power GPU is the active GPU, the low power GPU is operating at its maximum processing capacity, and a frame render time for the apparatus is decreasing.

.....

10.g) performing a context switch between the active GPU and the inactive GPU, wherein the active GPU becomes inactive and the inactive GPU becomes active to process a next frame of the sequence of frames

If I understood that well, if you're inside, for example, room and that scene is running at say 60fps on low power GPU, and you start rotating, window (or open door) comes into screen revealing outside and thus increasing scene complexity, low power GPU is at it's max, and time between frames starts to increase (frame rate dropping), it will switch to high power GPU.

Sounds interesting, as long as it does the job ill be happy.

They should at least mention where the info came out from.

Anyways great stuff :)

hehe yeah I was referring to the fact that the patent was brought to attention by Jeff Rigby of NeoGaf. I believe a friend of his helped him find it. Then it was posted on beyond3d etc etc.

Looks like the PS4 is going to be a beast of a console if they use the right dedicated GPU. And with ~4-8GB of RAM, I think developers will be satisfied, as well.
