Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Did you play 2D Mario on the NES/SNES?...how do you feel about the NSMB games?

Yes I did play the NES and SNES Mario games (and I still have them), and in my opinion, the NSMB games are largely disappointing.

I'm not a fan of the soundtrack of NSMB games ( in which the same soundtrack is used for all of them)

NSMBDS and NSMBWii were meh imo. They both failed to get me into them like the others, but I suppose they were still enjoyable at least in some level.

I have not played NSMB2 for 3DS yet, though I intend to get it at some point.

However, NSMBU was great and the best since World and the other originals. the only thing is dat soundtrack.

I agree with much of what has already been said by others ie as a veteran mario fan from the nes/snes era, I gotta say the nsmb games don't quite live up to the legacy set by the classics, and, yeah, the 3d mario games seem superior to the 'new' line in every way (we all know ninty only make the 'new' line of games to keep that amazing cash flow coming...look at how quickly they announced nsmb 2 for 3ds when that machine was doing poorly!!!! 'Don't worry mr investor...we got a new 2d mario game comin' out real soon heheh!')...

Having said that, I do tend to prefer the console versions of the 'new' line over the ds/3ds versions...the wii u version is (so far) probably the closest any of the 'new' games have come to genuinely living up to the standards of the nes and snes mario games...

I hated NSMB on the Wii. I beat it and thought it was terrible. Not only was the entire game a tutorial, that you can't turn off, it was super easy. I had 99 lives the whole game. I guess the levels were okay but it didn't compare to SMB3. I can't tell you how angry I was evertime a notice popped telling me how to use a freak'n mushroom, every time I got a mushroom. Mario has always been pretty kid friendly, I was completely fine at 4-6 playing mario so who are they targeting with NSMB? 2 year olds?

yes, i played every mario on nes/snes.  no i didn't like NSMB or NSMB wii very much.  partly because  of what was quoted but mostly because nintendo put such little effort into it.  music is terrible.  visuals are generic and lazy.  toad 1 and toad 2 pissed me off.

..for a 10M+ seller you'd they nintendo could put at least some effort into it.  mario galaxy got the AAA treatment and i loved it for it.  so why not give the same love to the even bigger seller???

SMB3 is IMHO the best in the series and probably the best in the genre and its all been downhill from there. The NSB series isnt bad but i feel they are not nearly as good as 3 or even World. They feel soulless, its like they are making them just to push some machines...which there is nothing wrong with that.

The major thing that the NSMB series is missing is "new" stuff, ironically. Every game in the New series so far has basically just been a rehash of ideas and themes from Mario 1, 3, and World with a little Yoshi's Island sprinkled in like the red coins... which you NEEDED to get in Yoshi's Island to get the best score, but serve no purpose in NSMB other than for a little added nostalgia and yet another way to get a 1-Up, as if you needed any more of them.

Us longtime Mario and Nintendo fans are still waiting patiently for a true Super Mario Bros 5, i.e. a 2D Mario game that is unique and innovative and doesn't have to rely entirely on nostalgia to sell well.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I suspect we'll be waiting for awhile

My first Mario game was 64, so the 3D games are really what I like the most. I will say this though, I did play SMB, SMB3, and SMW before the original NSMB came out. I loved those games, the music is fantastic, the games were visually unique, and they just felt well done. NSMB was decent, but nothing mind blowing. NSMBWii was pretty awful, really not even fun. NSMB2 is perhaps the most rushed game I have seen Nintendo put out, really made me not want to touch a Mario game for a long time. Now I'm almost done with NSMBU, and while it's EASILY the best in the "New" series, it's terrible music and "meh" graphics really hold it back. It's the best, but I'm so burnt out on Mario after NSMB2, that I'm not enjoying it to the level of the classics.

Nintendo really should give this series a looong break. Make another DKCR, that game was the best 2D platformer you've put out since the SNES. (Seriously, DKCR is perhaps better than the originals.)

My first Mario games were Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3...
The first"New" game I played was New Super Mario Bros. Wii...
The game was great when playing just by myself, but the multiplayer was really what made the game great...
My friends and I put more time into NSMBW than probably any other game this generation...
I later played the first "New" game, and while I did love it, I did wish I could go through the game with friends...
I felt like New Super Mario Bros. 2 was just okay...
And while I haven't finished New SUper Mario Bros. U, I do think it's great...
While I do think New Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best 2D Mario game, it's not by a horribly large margin...

Have a nice day...

Nintendo registered this earlier this year. Maybe a true "new" mario will happen sooner than with think?

I remember seeing that! My hope is that's a remake or revival of Super Mario World.

Remember, Super Mario World was originally called Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan :)
