I have made a vow to never buy any product of any kind at launch. After seeing the past six console and handheld launches, I think I'll stick to it.

i doubt if i'd buy a console at launch, but if i did it'd have to be the right price otherwise i'd wait 3 yr.'s

I'm on 3 consoles at launch so far. Gamecube, Wii & WiiU. Don't regret getting them.
All others were bought 1yr or so after launch. After either my parents got me it due to being too young (Master System, MegaDrive & Playstation) or until a game appeared that I wanted to play (Xbox360 & COD4)
I think it depends on if:
1 - There are games you want to play.
2 - Features (Xbox Live, Gamepad etc)
3 - Price
4 - If friends are also getting one.
I personally only buy Nintendo consoles at launch and wait to see which other one takes my fancy.

Buy one at launch with a warranty. At least in the US retailers generally sell a 3 year extended warranty. I'll be doing that with the new xbox for sure.

Depends. I bought a car 2 times at day one and never regretted it.

Never buying the systems at launch.
PS3's price point and 3DS price cut after like what 6 months release is proof of that.
