Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 5 reasons microsoft will fall behind next generation

The only thing that I can see saving msft in the long term is an opportunity that just falls into their lap.

One possibility of this would be a Sony breakup, as the company is already in dire straits, and msft purchasing the gaming division which would give it two thirds of the market and many studios to bully Nintendo around with.

I didn't realise that a company that had a huge increase in their market share, managed to make a profitable console, and has cemeted their image as the "console" in the US was in need of saving. Must mean some other companies are already dead in the water by that metric.

All the things you have listed are things that Microsoft does now and as far as I know they're doing quite well for themselves. If MS manages to do well in spite of what you've listed, why would these points suddenly be the reason they "fall behind" in the next gen?

Signature goes here!

probably not in US cause that's M$ fan-base...

or i should say US is Xbox brand-base...

I mainly agree. I think Mircrosoft will go back to beeing third next gen. Xbox live gold might be a good reason why that happens aswell has lack of exclusives. They are gonna get hit by the mistakes they made this gen.

Go back? It beat Gamecube last gen.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Hmm... did it? It come out last so it must've been a while until that happened.  Doesnt matter though. If its not "back to"its they will go to. Though im pretty sure that the US is still gonna embrace the system. Europe and Japan most probably wont with a competitive PS4 out though.

1. They have no clear path

360 actually appeals to both core and casuals the best out of all 3 this gen. Nintendo was mostly casual with Wii and Sony is mostly core, though they wanted to be casual if Move succeeded.

This just means that next Xbox will benefit from both markets. Sony doesnt have casuals on their side.

2. Xbox live gold

Live Gold hasn't hampered MS in the last 10 years and in fact has only grown. You can complain but talk is cheap. The suscribers and money generated speak far louder.

3. Lack of dedicated exclusives

MS opened many studios in the last 2 years with thr purpose of making next gen content.

4. 360 2 + japan = dead on arrival

360 sells bad in Japan. Its still 2nd place after 7 years. You dont need Japan to be relevant anymore in the console space. Its nice, but not essential.

5. They focus too much on the competition

This is by far their best asset. They see what their competitor does and capitalizes on their weaknesses. MS has made brutal business move after another one against Sony and the results speak for themselves. Massive gen over gen improvement while PS declined. Sony mishandling is to blame, but so is MS's ability to take advantage.

if Sony launches in every region globaly day, date, month, and yr., then MS has little to no chance of second place, let alone 1st.

only one problem with number 1. Xbox live is their focus on games, but everything else i agree with. everything else i'd say i spot on.

But i do think MS will have something else that PS/ninty gamers want, and it will likely be an online feature.

then again, anything can happen. nothing is ever set in stone, or guaranteed.

For me the reason i probably won'tbuy XBOX(whatever) os
1. RROD is unacceptable
2. Paying for online just to get services like Netflix that is accessable on eveything else without paying twice
3. Complete lack of interesting exclusives that i am interested in.
