Forums - Sales Discussion - When does a generation end?

Many have in this thread before me. Although sales wasn't the word used they still implied it. I'm just so sick of these threads lately. In the last few months this site has really gone down hill. It's all about damage control and doom treads wiht a few of this isn't worth $60 a year or Windows 8 selling below expectations, Forza tanking crap..... Just over it.

On a happier note I also see you're playing Crisis Core, it's up there for my game of the generation. It stomps everything else out for hand-held without a doubt.

Sales and Logic brought it up (surprise surprise, both are banned), and only one person referred to it after that.

I also agree, Crisis Core is the shiznit.

for me its when more than one of the previous gets released, so for consoles im still in 7th gen till MS or sony release another to go against wiiu

i cant have a new gen with one machine out, for me i need at least 2 or all to compare, argue, troll with

Similar thing in History. The launch of the Wii U is a turning point but there are no clean cuts in History. When did the Middle Ages end? Some historians talk about the fall on Constantinople, some others use the Discovery of America; but the fact of the matter is that the Middle Ages didn't finish at the same time everywhere neither did the Renaissance of the modern age all over the world.

Anyway, the clock is ticking for Sony and Microsoft...

I'll say the current generation ends when all players enter the next generation with their next gen consoles.

It doesn't end when one company preemptively quits on their current generation hardware because sales and support tapped out before the competition.

Sega didn't end the 5th generation by introducing the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was introduced early because there was no point in backing a losing horse in the Sega Saturn.

Microsoft didn't end the 6th generation by canceling production of the original X-box shortly after introducing the X-box 360.

The "Victory Lap" after the current gen ends doesn't begin until all console manufacturers have their new generation hardware available and all remaining sales of their previous generation hardware eventually determine the final tallies.

But I stress this is not to say that these remnant sales mean much of anything other than profits to the manufacturer. They don't determine support for the next generation of consoles as these sales represent residual sales and front line developer support for the next generation is determined well before this stage.

ppl make things hard, doesnt matter if a new console releases, its not a war between the ps3 and 720,or a war between the 360 and ps4 or wiiu vs 360 ect,the war is between the wii/360/ps3.new consoles battle with other new consoles... the only way a generation truely ends is when MANUFACTURING LITERALLY STOPS and there are no consoles on the shelf to buy. every 360 and ps3 sold after the 740/ps4 gets released still counts,so dont the profits they make still go into their banks, you gonna tell me the 30M consoles/profit the ps2 sold after the ps3 was officially announced(e305?) dont go to their total, were those consoles sold to ghost or actual ppl?

i here microsoft only ppl say it doesnt count when all the new consoles are on the market,,,dont count according to who?? the console gods? are the profits also make believe?... what if sony makes up their own childish rules and says, hey,we havent even got a chance to permanently sell all are ps3 sku's at 199$,so uuumm, let us reach that point and sell at 199 at least for a year and a half, then will call it a day and all the tallys will finally end ok?.. makes no sense, all sales count no matter the time period or pricepoint... i think microsoft fans know the outcome to this story by making up rules(that make no sense),they know 3rd place is looming hard and heavy, once the ps3 hits 199 and lower, they remember how the ps2 sold after the ps3 was announced/launched ,and theirs no reason to think thats not gonna happen again...look at the sales between ps3 and 360 since the ps3 launched, its a beatdown by millions in the ps3 favor.... i think the ps3 is gonna make a decent run at the wii ltd.
