The 3DS is not ahead in Japan.  The DS has about a 2 million lead in the same period of time.  It also averaged 204k per week for the next 17 weeks, so the 3DS is unlikely to pull ahead.

The DS explosion came later in the US, but you can see the enormous cliff that the 3DS is about to face in comparisons.

Dam the GBA sold gangbusters at first but quickly feel off didn't it.

The GBA got undercut by the DS launching just 3 1/2 years in, so it's lifespan was cut short. Nintendo probably should've launched it earlier.
