Nintendo said themselves that they would let the third parties primarily deal with online multiplayer.

No they said shooters they will let the call of duties do.

"Kotaku got Nintendo to admit in-game chatting on the Wii U would only work on "select games" includingAssassin's Creed IIICall of Duty Black Ops 2, andMass Effect. This gels with previous statements in which Nintendo hinted it would allow third-party publishers to implement their own online gameplay solutions, rather than locking them into a system-wide online solution. It's still a little disappointing that the company has removed any possibility of Xbox Live-style, cross-game party chat, or even casual voice conversations during single-player games."

As I said, Nintendo is leaving it up to the third parties rather than having one sweeping online product for the consumers to enjoy. Iwata and Reggie need to make up their minds, because Iwata said Nintendo is not competing with the PS4 and 720 when they eventually come, and will not play their game but rather will focus on making something completely different. That is how they can survive. Reggie said different on CNN when he was boasting how the Wii U is more powerful than current gen consoles, which isnt saying much because next gen third party devs already know they are going to get slayed. I think the truth is somewhere between what Reggie and Iwata are both saying. They dont want to directly face the next Playstation and Xbox but they dont want their fans to depend on them for third party titles either. This is what I am gathering.I doubt they will be able to get all the third party titles they need to keep their fans away though.

This post just reminds me how CONFUSED I am about Nintendo's online strategy.

BUT I still think Miiverse is a step in the right direction. Do I want more integration a la Live? Yes, but I think Nintendo did a surprisingly great job with Miiverse. I'd say it's pretty unique as far as social networking goes, which is an incredibly difficult thing to do.

Around the Network

Today i learned new super mario wii u doesnt have online multiplayer....what a fucking joke

I suppose the most simple explanation might be the most appropriate one: it doesn't need online multiplayer.

Not every game does.

That has nothing to do with Nintendo saying they won't do online games and will leave that up to 3rd parties.  What that is saying is that they won't establish a one size fits all online criteria that all online games must adhere too like Xbox Live.   This is giving 3rd partiees the freedom to establish how they want their online interactivity to be.

I take it you have this same problem with Sony since they too have a more open policy than MS?

Sonys open poiicy has more to do with the PS3's OS but their opneness also has to do with their cross platform goals. Their online if cross chat goals  can be met next gen plus being open to cross platform with PC could be the card Sony needs to trump MS in the multiplayer department. Everyone forgets that Sony has been the only company working with Valve on cross platform games. Even after Gabe Newell talked shit about Sony (and later appologized for it) he realized who is trying to really stretch the arms of online and not stifle people. Doesn't seem like Nintendo is even ready for it and Microsoft doesnt want to open up their system to anyone. To leave the online up to third parties is lazy, even though I do applaud Nintendo for how they've dealt with the online in their own way. Online is becoming manditory even with some action adventure games these days on the 360 and PS3 platforms, so Nintendo has got no excuse, but lets see how they play their cards, because its only the first year.
