OT: I have no idea. It would make sense that sometimes you cannot play local MP with friends (which I agree it's the best way to play it), due to a huge number of reasons. You would think such an important and iconic franchise would include online on its 2D iterations. If LBP can pull it off, there is no reason why these high quality, "innovative" mario games can't. Period. 

Although the MiiVerse/Dark Souls message tips are a cool addition.

The game mechanics of the NSMB series simply don't lend well to online gaming.

It's not because they are too lazy to implement it (dumbest excuse ever given) or simply don't know how (Mario kart games are fantastic online).

There are online leaderboards for New super mario brothers 2 i thought. With that gold rush mode.

If you mean cooperative play online... hmmm... im sure its meant to happen eventually.

LBP is great with multiplayer...Not sure why Mario would suck with MP. Imo it would have a lot more going for it with the kind of cock ups it would allow.

That's 3 franchises.  All are designed with game mechanics that benefit from online play.  Unlike the NSMB series which doesn't lend well to online play....nor do many of their 1st party games.
